Well, I'm not. The company is though. If you are a temp, you may not be asked back the next day at any time for any reason. Some of the reasons include not getting along with any other employee, missing work for any reason (including your mother's funeral as was told to one temp, making any mistake even if it was because you were not trained properly, getting injured even if it was someone else's fault, complaining at all, refusing to do any task assigned to you even if it might cause you to get injured or make a mistake, goofing off at all even if permanent employees are, and not working being above average at your job even if it is your first day. If there are any other temps there during your time as a temp, you are competing against them. If you have been there for a couple months and they call in a temp because someone missed and that temp is better than you, that temp will get the more permanent position and you will be the temp on call. You will not automatically get hired after 90 days, only if there is a permanent opening (even if there seems to be one because you've been there everyday). This opening may not be in the area that you have worked in, but these postings are your only chance. If a permanent employee wants that position, you won't get it. Of course in the shuffling, there usually will be an open position, the one that no one wants. You will be extensively reviewed before you are hired. We have had a few temps fired after this process. Temps are a dime a dozen. Permanent employees are an investment. The reward for all of this is a living wage first job with somewhat regular hours. During an employee meeting in which employees asked for added perks, we were reminded that the company put out a job service ad which received over 300 responsees. They could replace us all within days. We don't work for the best company in the world either. I'm not worried about getting fired though for a couple reasons. Despite what they'd have me believe, I am very good at my job. No one else does my job. Those who have been trained to do some of my work are not good at the job. No one in the company who doesn't have a better job is qualified to do the job (if they stick to the official job description). My manager is already too busy and wouldn't want to deal with trying to train someone else. I would also see getting fired as an oppurtunity. Right now I feel trapped there with benefits and lack of better paying oppurtunities for which I am qualified and the burden of having to give 2 weeks notice (some positions for which I have applied really want someone to start right away and will hire those candidates instead).
