LIVERPOOL OVER AC MILAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YNWA
I think that was the greatest game ever... what about you lot?

"Liverpool erupts in joy at astonishing win

By Alaa Shahine

LIVERPOOL, England, May 25 (Reuters) - Ecstatic Liverpool fans erupted in uncontrolled joy on Wednesday night after their team beat AC Milan in a nail-biting penalty shootout to clinch the Champions League final.

Thousands of people danced wildly in the streets of the northern English city and leapt into each others' arms after a rollercoaster match which took them from despair to delight.

A huge roar rang out in pubs and homes around the city when Andriy Shevchenko failed Milan's final chance in the penalty shootout, handing the Merseyside team victory.

"It's a fairytale ending," said Stephen Tighe, 22, who watched the game in a central Liverpool pub.

"If you had told anyone we'd be 3-0 down and come back to win it, no one would have believed it."

Hundreds of people wearing red Liverpool shirts chanted, jumped into the air and sprayed beer over each other in celebration in the city centre.

Cars drove by, honking their horns, red scarves and flags streaming from their windows.

"I cannot explain my feelings," said 26-year-old Robert Smith. "It's the most amazing game I've ever watched."

Supporters of the English club were stunned when Milan's Paolo Maldini scored in the first minute.

By halftime they were desolate as two goals by Argentine striker Hernan Crespo gave AC Milan a 3-0 lead.

But despair turned to jubilation as they pulled back three goals in rapid succession.

Fans who only minutes before had been cradling their heads in their hands before TV screens in Liverpool pubs, leapt into the air, hugging each other and dancing for joy when Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso pulled their team back to 3-3 early in the second half.

No further goals before full time and in 30 minutes of extra play meant anxious times as the game was decided on penalties.

Concerns about public safety had led to the scrapping of plans to show the match live on a huge screen in the city centre.

But there was no holding the fans back after their team's astonishing victory.

"At halftime a miracle must have happened," said Alan Tyrrell, 31, surrounded by fans clapping and chanting the team's anthem "You'll never walk alone." "

3. Unbelievable!
I am still stunned. Absolutely unbelievable.

The way they overcame that 3-0 halftime deficit was nothing short of heroic.

...Simply amazing. Go Liverpool!

You'll never walk alone!

5. There can be no doubt
the greatest match I have ever watched or even heard of. Especially considering EVERYTHING ELSE Liverpool had to do to get there in the first place.

6. Yawn.
I'm sorry, I don't give a toss. All this means is that there'll be less chance of my street being vandalised, and a greater chance of it being vomited on.

7. Hey, to each his/her own
If you don't care for football, that's fine with me, but just realize what this means to a lot of people.

8. No, it's not fine, because football "fans" don't see it that way.
By not loving football, I have significantly increased the risk of casual violence to myself. Football "fans" see themselves as perfectly within their rights to get outrageously drunk, destroy property, vomit and urinate copiously on the street, and indulge in open violence. I know that many sensible and sane people follow football. You know what? I don't give a shit. You have squandered any right you had to respect by allowing your sport to be dominated by animalistic thugs and profiteering businessmen. You watch your overpaid prettyboys prance about in a field, and call it the "Beautiful Game". I'll sweep up the broken glass. AGAIN.

9. Well, then...
You think you're the only "victim" (if you can call it that) of sports fans??? Try walking down the street in LA after the Lakers won the NBA Championship. Go to NY wearing a Red Sox hat, and see how much hospitality you will get. Look at what happened with Ron Artest, the Pacers and the Pistons...yeah, real peace and love. I like how you throw the sane and sensible people you know into the same box as some hoodlums. Many people would take ANY excuse to get drunk, and football itself has NO FAULT at all for their actions. Get some respect for the majority of people who follow the Beautiful Game. FIFA has harshly penalized entire cities for actions of a few troublemakers, NO PRO LEAGUE can claim the same.

"...dominated by animalistic thugs and profiteering businessmen."
Oh, and what about those Manchester U. fans who are protesting a profiteering businessman's takeover of THEIR club?? I'll let you ponder that one a little bit.

You sweep up the broken glass, but that is a product of irresponsible drunkards, and not football.

Maybe you just need a hobby.

10. I didn't say "victim".
I'll ignore all your talk about other sports because it doesn't prove or disprove my point. You also seem to have disregarded that I was sparing the decent people who like football from opprobium. But I notice that when the pub on my street is showing rugby or cricket or tennis there are far fewer fights, there's much less noise and there's less violence and vandalism. I don't see why I should have any respect for people who prop up this relentless orgy of greed. I mean, I'm sure you're a lovely and balanced guy. But get a grip.

As for your remark "what about those Manchester U. fans who are protesting a profiteering businessman's takeover of THEIR club??", it's not THEIR club. It belongs to the shareholders MUFC sold it to in their relentless, headlong pursuit of profit. Ponder on that. The club was flogged off. The sin here, if there was one, was committed by the directors who took it public in the first place, not Malcolm Glazer. He just bought a publicly traded asset. Ponder that one.

As for your "get a hobby" remark, that was just unnecessary.

11. It is very valid
It shows that all sports are very prone to violence. Irresponsibility is hardly a football-only phenomenon. This is central, because if you are cynical toward football due to some of its fans' actions, then it would be good of you to be cynical toward all major sports.

If you did spare the decent people who like football, that is great and I overlooked that.

"Orgy of greed"??? Orgy of recklessness, maybe. I think you can see the difference between football and cricket and tennis, or else we might as well end this argument right now. I can tell you that I've been to European football matches and they were more tame than many college hockey games, or even my high school basketball games.

On many levels, it IS THEIR club. They buy the tickets, they support the players. Just because they do not hold the shares does not mean that they are to be considered as a part of the club as anyone else. The real sin is Glazer trying to takeover the club without giving a crap about the fans' feelings. The supporters are doing what they CAN to oppose a profiteering businessman, something you said they were guilty of NOT doing.

My apologies for the "get a hobby" remark IF you indeed were merely expressing your discontent with paying for irresponsible actions, but I felt that you were insulting football itself, as well as everyone involved. I think your grievances lie with drunks who happen to like football, not football supporters.

13. And yet, as I say, this violence doesn't happen with other sports.
Sure, maybe it's a few drunks and I shouldn't tar football with that brush. But it doesn't happen during Wimbledon, or during the Six Nations. Many of my friends like football. We spar like this regularly.

And it is an orgy of greed; any enterprise that brings out four new shirts a year, each one horribly overpriced, is an orgy of greed. And the fans are NOT in any way "owners" of MUFC, they are its customers. Sure, they pour in money. That's their role. But they are just customers, not shareholders. And their precious club has been sold to an American Asset-stripper. They can blame Glazer all they want - they should look at whoever sold the club to him.

It's all profit and raw capitalism, man, can't you see it?

14. Yes, it does
every major contact sport suffers from the same problems. As I have said, some high school basketball games of little importance had a great level of animosity towards the players. LA had riots when their team WON. An entire arena threw their beer cups at a team, and players openly assaulted fans (although some fans ran on the court, for some reason).

You cannot be serious if you compare football to Wimbledon. That's ridiculous. Tennis is nothing like football in any way. It does not have a fraction of the popularity, it is not a contact sport, there is no semblance of rivalries, the sport is individual and does not demand loyalty (besides the Davis Cup), among countless other differences. I would also like to remind you that a female player was brutally stabbed a few years back, her career was largely ruined. At a recent tennis tournament, something happened to a player/duo of the host country and the crowd felt they were treated unfairly; an intense riot broke out as virtually the entire crowd began hurling their chairs at the court and the riot police.

The fans are blaming Glazer AND the people who are selling it to him (although, to my knowledge, he is buying stocks, not buying the club per say). The fans' role is supporting the club, take away the fans and what do you have? Not much.

EVERY sporting organization short of curling tries to make money off of their fans. I must say that a football kit is A LOT less than most NBA jerseys. If you're so mad about clubs making excess money off of their products, why don't you blame capitalism instead of the sport?
