2. Buy an aerosol spray..
preferably from a reputable chemical company (RAID, Black Flag, etc.). These companies make a streaming spray that kills them darn near on contact. It's best to do it at night, though, because the wasps are inactive.

17. this is what i did - works perfectly!
we did it early in the morning, before they were active. you can stand some distance away and spray a fine stream. we did it twice to make sure they were gone. they croak immediately!

6. I forgot about that...
the ether in starting fluid kills them instantly. That's a good option too.

12. "Do not smoke while doing this..."
Christ, you reminded me of seeing the front of a '63 Rambler Ambassador station wagon go up flames a long (long, long) time ago, because a guy I knew didn't believe the warning on the can of starting fluid...

8. Don't screw around with this. Call a pro. It'll cost about $100...

or maybe a bit less, but it's worth it.

I had a beehive under the roof-eave in my backyard last summer, and I tried the do-it-yourself method, as proscribed: a good-quality duster (the classic metal spray-can), and a huge bag of sevin dust. I *doused* the bees and the hive with dust. Piece of cake. Later on, I climbed up on the ladder to check on my work -- at night, because I heard that the bees would be less active. Well, my efforts were rewarded by three very pissed-off bees that quickly flew under my t-shirt, and stung me pretty good. The worst part is your thrashing, kicking, jumping instinct to get away, and yet you're still up on the ladder, so the danger of a bad fall is multiplied. I bailed out on the lawn, so luckily I wasn't hurt.

The next day I called a pro -- he put on his "space suit" and took care of it in about 15 minutes. Don't wait -- some bees can cause damage to interior woodwork, or leave literally several pounds of honey behind, which means tearing a hole in your wall to clean it up.

Good luck!

9. No I would never think of doing it myself

And certainly never with a base ball bat-
Thanks, I just wanted a ball park of what it would cost. The nest is huge and I want it gone.

18. Until the pros arrive, get some orange cleaner
The kind that is made from orange oil. It will stop an attacking wasp cold. I get wasp nests every summer on my porch and I spray them with that stuff to prevent any wasps from returning to it. I think it causes a rapid breakdown of their exoskeletons. It is also effective when they attack, causing them to drop to the ground faster than RAID ever did. And it's not highly toxic to humans and animals like the regular insecticides are. I'm just suggesting you use it for protection until the pros arrive cuz I never tried it on a nest any bigger than a baseball. Incidentally, it's a good, relatively safe insecticide for ants, too.

19. Thanks for the info!
I've used WD-40, hair spray, and air freshener on wasps and flies, but never orange cleaner (I like that it's not as toxic as sprays such as Raid and Combat). :hi:

10. Wait until after dark.
They will be asleep. Then, get some flying insect Raid or the like and spray the shit out of it. Get a bucket or something get it in there. Make sure it's full of water. Viola! Nest gone!

11. Get a can of "insect fogger"
like you'd use to clear fleas, etc out of your house.

Tape it to a long stick, light the sumbitch off, and stick the outlet into the entrance of the wasp's nest.

You'll hear some furious buzzing for a minute or two, but when the canister is empty, the inside of the nest will be so coated with poison that even the returning wasps will croak after they have a crawl inside.

Works every time.

13. My grandma used to use hair spray
She sprayed the hive at night and then lit it on fire. Seemed to work. But I was just a little kid and don't remember if they came back again.

15. I had one last summer.
It cost about $80 to get rid of it. It was a bald-faced hornets nest and the exterminator was extremely freaked out over the size of it. :scared:
