Your favorite quote attributed to Jesus
One of mine is:

Matthew 6:5 "And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

34 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? 38 And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? 39 And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' 40 And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Matthew 25:34-40

8. That's one of about three verses that sincerely and deeply move me.
That's why I'll likely always be a sucker for a homeless person pandhandling. I just feel like a shit for turning them down knowing that in all likelihood, they have nothing but misery in their lives. If I don't have money, I'll at least go home and make them a lunchbag with a sandwich, trail mix, cheese crackers, and a bottled water. No one should go hungry in this country.

12. And it continues:
25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

25:42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

25:44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

(Does this remind you of anyone, hmmmm?)

3. Mine: a story
An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all - he is the greatest."

Luke 9:46, 46-48

6. “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
—Matthew 22:34-40

Christ goes on to define "neighbor" as being everyone.

30. Here is a similar feel
“Among the sayings and discourses imputed to him by his biographers, I find many passages of fine imagination, correct morality, and of the most lovely benevolence; and others again of so much ignorance, so much absurdity, so much untruth, charlatanism, and imposture, as to pronounce it impossible that such contradictions should have proceeded from the same being. ~Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Short, April 13, 1820

9. Another
"Some of the Pharisees near him heard this, and they said to him, 'Are we also blind?' Jesus said to them, 'If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your guilt remains." John 9:41

It also proves that the literalists are wrong to believe Jesus PHYSCIALLY healed the blind.

13. Judge not, that ye be not judged.
Edited on Tue May-24-05 08:24 PM by Prisoner_Number_Six
Matthew 7

7:1
Judge not, that ye be not judged.

7:2
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

7:3
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

7:4
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

7:5
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

7:6
Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

7: 7
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

7:8
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

36. It Means Some People Will Tear You Apart If You Give Them...
...scriptures, similar to "attacking the messenger", and some people will challenge you... Some people have a "violent" hatred for the Word of GOD, and for the believers of GOD... (It happens right here in DU occasionally). It's best not to argue about The LORD, and sometimes it's best not to even mention GOD to truly "evil" people, (demons hate The Word of GOD). JESUS died for sinners, but not all sinners want to hear it (until they are "ready").
Since you asked...

20. Matthew 5:38
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth!!!!

Yeah buddy, I'm gonna be kickin some ass!!!!!!

Sorry, I had a freeper moment.

Matthew 15:7 is very good....
Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Also John 8:7
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

I also like it when he talks about the 'publicans... :)

Matthew 5:46 - For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the 'publicans the same?

Most any verse from it will set a new pharisee/fundies head reeling.

Pray in private.
Treat everyone as you treat me.
Take care of each other.
Don't crave money.
And so on...

Forgive the simplifications, if you will.

Edited on Wed May-25-05 09:19 AM by northzax
and black people, and poor people, and heathens, and unwed mothers, and masturbaters and government buearocrats, and Democrats, and Rock and or Roll music, and scientists, and doctors and lawyers, but especially them gays. I hates them, hates them, hates them. However, I loveth anyone who uses my name to marginalize any of the above groups, and shall bestow upon them all the financial riches they can acquire by any means, for they doeth my work in ridding the world of those I hate. Grr, I'm so mad I can barely stand it just thinking about those embryo-disposing, fair-tax distributing, gay people, I hates them.
