4. Y a I've seen them in stores

The stores with wierd electronic Nick Nacks like lava lamps, disco balls, and those wierd globes with lightning.

I think they cost about fifty bucks. They also have caller IDs that use the same display technique.

As "qnr" said, these are sold ready-made as the Fantazein clock. I have one. Though this sounds hard to believe, I found it left out for the trash last November or thereabouts. I was looking at it trying to figure out what it was when the person who threw it out came over and explained that it was a clock. The family had discarded it because it makes a whirring sound as the wand whips back and forth, and that sound was keeping her son awake. Before you take the plunge and buy one, listen to it for a while to make sure the noise will not outweigh the cool factor.

As the link "qnr" provided says, you can download .pdf manuals for them explaining how to write your own messages for the display. The clock is not particularly attractive; it will clash with just about any decor.

I do have to say that they are utterly fascinating to watch.
