I just got fired
Gotta love that compassionate conservative morality! I was in the hospital for a week, in IMCU, not one phone call from the boss to ask how I was. I got out of the hospital, but was not released to go back to work for a month. Still no calls, and they wouldn't answer mine, I just kept leaving voice mails. Last week, I went back to work after begging the doctor to release me. I wasn't able to pull a full week...I worked a full day Monday, half a day Tuesday, and a full day Wednesday. Believe me, I need the money, and would have been there if i had been able.

This morning, on my way in, my cell phone rang. It was a guy that has been staffing the small business with temp help. He tells me that he's handling all personnel matters for the bossbitch, and that as of today, I am terminated. Spineless little bitch couldn't even fire me herself, let alone face to face.

8. Doesn't sound to me like you have officially been terminated
if you got the word from a third party like that. Especially one who says he's handling the personnel matters. Might be he just wants to get your replacement in there at a cheaper rate. If you don't go in they can always say it was your decision and you won't get any unemployment benefits if you don't have any termination notice in writing from them.

She's never there, won't return phone calls. Her way of dealing with things that she doesn't like is avoidance. I may have to get something in writing for the food stamp people...which really sucks.

9. Were you considered a temporary employee?
Because if so... then they just screwed you.

But if you were a regular full time employee, get a lawyer....
because regardless of if the bossbitch likes it or not there is still the Family Leave and Medical Act, signed by THE BIG DAWG.
See if it fits....

50. It depends - was there a benefits package that included sick leave?
If so, termination in retaliation for exercising sick leave benefits is a violation of federal ERISA law.

13. Hopefully
This will be one of those things that looks bad now, but turns out well for you in the future.

I think of my mom when I post this, as she too had a terrible job, a bunch of right-wingers worked there and gave her a hard time, not because of her political persuasion, but because, well, they were just assholes. So eventually she was ousted, ended up quitting because they were trying to move her. She was upset, but eventually she got a job at a local college, is surrounded by very supportive liberals, and I must say a couple of pretty nice conservatives too. She doesn't quite make as much, but from her stories, she likes working there much better, and the conditions are nicer, and it isn't nearly as far to drive each day.

So, sometimes things that seem bad can turn out pretty good for you. I hope that things work out that way for you, and that you continue to improve from whatever ailed you in your hospital stay.

37. I have been told that they can.
I worked at a job where a woman did not show up for her shift. They fired her immediately w/o contacting her. We were told to tell her to go home if she came in. She had never missed a day of work before.
The next day we found out that she had been in a serious rollover car accident and that she was found quite a few hours after it happened (gravel road way in the country-she was driving in to work). Turns out she was run off of the road by some drunk teens in a pickup and they didn't stop to help or even alert anyone. Her SO saw the vehicle out in a cornfield about a mile from their home. She alerted the highway patrol.
The woman never got her job back. She was told that is because Missouri is a Right to Work state and that you can be terminated for almost any reason.

43. Outrageous!
The woman was in a car accident, and they fired her because she missed one day of work while she was out lying in a ditch? What did they expect her to do, crawl from her car just to punch the clock later.

Who at work spoke up for that woman's plight? Never mind, she didn't deserve that type of manglement.

17. Sorry to hear that
I was fired for missing 4 days of work because I was sick but they used it as an excuse to fire me because they were cutting back on staff.I was a temp which meant I didnt have any recourse.

Sounds like you would be happier somewhere else from the way you describe your boss.

18. Thanks to all of you for the support
I'm going to try to answer several questions in one post...

No, I was not a temp. I was hired by them in October, full time, insurance went effective in Januaury.

The guy that fired me is doing the dirty work for the boss. She has no spine, particularly when it comes to firing people.

I wouldn't qualify for FMLA for a couple of reasons...First, I had not been employed there for a year. Second, it's a small business, which is exempt anyway.

They didn't fire me for being in the hospital. They made sure to get my release from the doctor. I couldn't pull a full week last week, and they claim that's why they fired me.

I am filing for unemployment online, right now. Funny, I had apllied for food stamps and TANF while I was out sick, and my appointment is this afternoon.

27. I forgot to mention...
A few months ago, there was a nasty rat infestation. I'm talking big honking rats running across the office while people were obviously there. Supposedly, all vermin are dead now, but the mess remains. They moved ceiling tiles to run computer cabling, and the guy nearly fell off the ladder. The insulation was soaked in rat mess. Wonder how breathing that crap for months affected my asthma?

Go to your workplace and ask if it's true. Do not go in acting angry or loud.

If they start calling the cops on you, leave quietly.

But it wouldn't surprise me that some turd is playing with your head (illegaly) because he is a moran.

I am glad that I no longer work there. I will no longer have to force myself to go to a place that I hate five days a week. I hope the next job is a blue one.

On the other hand, now I have to figure out how to pay the bills. I have applied for unemployment, and I already had an appointment set for today for food stamps, since I was off of work for a month sick as a dog. I didn't qualify for emergency status, even though I was completely broke, so it took three weeks of waiting for an appointment.

46. I saw that
Don't feel bad. My oldest was kicked out of three daycares before he was three. We later learned that he is ADHD and has Asperger's syndrome (high functioning autism). Daycare tends to be unstructured, which over stimulates him, and the trouble begins. He's eleven now, and had the best school year of his life. They finally figured out last year that he generally got into trouble during times when things were not very structured...the end of PE, recess, the end of the school day when they were getting ready to go home. The teachers this year worked wonders to keep life as structured as possible...no problems!
