Found out recently than an ex fiance has become a neocon! Ewwwww!
I cannot tell you how much I feel like I need to bathe in disinfectant; And I haven't even seen her in 8 years now!

She was a very liberal, almost leftist sexworker when I knew her. Funny thing is, she has lived off the state MANY times in her very troubled life, and appears to be receiving an SSI disability now. How can she even begin to justify THAT?

What makes people change like that? Mental health issues? I think at its core, neoconism is a mental illness, and she certainly had issues with mental illness when I knew her.

Does anybody else have similar experiences?

1. Daughter's father is one.
And I'm not surprised. But he used to be a lib once a long time ago.

2. Yeah
My ex-husband - raging hippie, leftwing, rock'n'roll guy - is now heavily involved in a rightwingnut church in SoCal.

Who knows? Let's just count ourselves lucky to have escaped when we did.

3. Definitely psychological issues, IMHO.
Neoconism is not always a mental illness -- but I think it sometimes is a way of psychologically protecting oneself from reality.

Yeah, I'm on SSI -- but I'm not ashamed because I BELIEVE IN PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and HAVE A YELLOW RIBBON ON MY CAR.

6. Inhale deeply...and exhale a big "WHEW!"
That you escaped before 'the change' took place.

7. Wow. You were engaged to a sexworker?
And that didn't give you any problems, jealousy-wise? You must be the most emotionally secure guy I have ever run across. I admire that greatly.

8. I cannot take credit for what comes naturally.
I just don't seem to have ever had a problem with being sexually possessive.

She didn't work all that much after she got here. She was working as a professional submissive for a Dominatrix friend of mine, and also flew out to NV to work in the legal brothel's there on two occasions. Mostly she wrote. Finally, and after we broke up, she had a number of things published including a book on how to be a sexworker.

And you know, she left all of her worldly goods here and never came to get them. Much of it is still in the carriage house. She also left her three cats, two of whom have now passed from old age.

It was not too long after she was gone that I met my Katy, the love of my life, and we were married in a beautiful ceremony in Key West almost six years ago! Best decision I ever made. :)

9. Maybe these people feel the need to punish themselves.
Raise hell the first part of your life then beat yourself up with conservative fundieism the rest of it. It may be a way of repentence. Just my 2 pennies.

10. I'm not sure if that is it with her.
I think it might be more the influence of the fellow she left to live with in Idaho. He is a militia nut and is in Idaho hiding out from warrants, or so I've heard.

11. The newly converted are often the most fanatical
Alfo, when somebody with an extreme viewpoint changes their mind, they often take up the mirror position, just as extreme.

That's why i caution people against instilling extreme viewpoints in themselves or others.
