3. I had to go with the pelican at sunset

I love sunset and sunrise pictures. The pelican picture reminds me of a time I was at a beach and having a wonderful time.

I went with Hoar Frost because it is so surreal looking.

10. This is the first contest where my photo didn't make the final contest.

And all I can say is, "Phew!" The pressure is off! Every one of these photos is great, they all deserve to win. Now I can relax and watch as the results come in. :D

16. Fantastic display, guys! I picked Broken Glass for its

overlaying layers and reflections of light and shadow, for its rich jewel tones, and for its sensuality......and this all against the pitch black background make it irresistible to me.

But they all are really great entries for this theme.

I chose Cord because it seemed to best exemplify the theme of light and shadow. Hoar Frost is stunning and my second choice. Number three is also a sentimental favorite ( beach bum) and my 11-year-old son loves number six, Pelican at Sunset because "it shows the light and dark of sunset."

Each photographer should be proud. This was a tough one to call!

Technically excellent composition, framing and treatment of the theme. The cord, itself partly in light, partly in shadow, flows into and out of the background light (that is, creating a pattern of light in front of shadow, shadow in front of light), while toying with the edge of this light. And the shadow (a projection of 3D into 2D) tells us things about the object that aren't obvious from the perspective held (taken) on the object itself, while at the same time hiding complexities of the object in 3D -- or at least it so appears.

I might have liked to see a little more graying (complexity) in the light as it flows across the picture, in addition to that already there. Hard to say.
