China outlaws 'naked sushi' meals

BBC

The Chinese government has banned restaurants from serving food on the bodies of naked women.

The practice was condemned as a violation of common decency by the commerce department.

The ban also aims to stop businesses from using nude models to promote their goods, Xinhua news agency reports.

In April 2004, Chinese media said that a Japanese restaurant in south-west China was fined 2,000 yuan ($240; £130) after it offered to serve "body sushi".

4. On a tedious but worthy note,
this is a move to be supported. Although "body sushi" might sound as harmless as lap dancing (which might not sound at all harmless to some people), it carries disturbing racial, sexual and political overtones in China. It is a Japanese dish served in Japanese restaurants, the customers are often large parties of Japanese businessmen and the women doing the "serving" are Chinese.

This is extremely offensive and unacceptable to many Chinese, and has been linked directly to the "comfort women" enforced prostitution that the Japanese army used to terrify Korean and Chinese women. I don't need to go into the animus between China and Japan here, which was the cause of the recent unrest, but a lot of anger stems from this kind of objectification.

Anyway, tedious moaning over.
