1. Seems like at least a few DUers are rather into
the odd bit of BSD. I say live and let live - what they do in the privacy of their own bedrooms is of no concern to me.

FreeBSD is a Un*x-y operating system. Unix and its workalikes is divided into two "flavors," BSD (which once stood for Berkeley Software Distribution -- it was originally written at UCB) and SystemV. FreeBSD is a BSD-type operating system. Linux is basically a SystemV operating system.

Mac OSX is based on FreeBSD.

Unix uses processes called "daemons" to run various services such as printing, network, and lots of other things. These processes run continuously in the background. A service can be restarted by stopping and restarting the daemon -- usually there is no need to reboot.

BSD has long used a "daemon" called "Phroed" (Fred) as a mascot. FreeBSD's daemon is a particular depiction of Phroed.

I am a Linux user, but appreciate FreeBSD.
