Damn dog!
What to do about Pippin the pee machine?

He's 11 months old, and he doesn't seem to be progressing in house training. We do have a good kennel for him. We do make him go outside immediately when he has an accident.

What else can we do?

1. My father-in-law named one of their fox terriers. "Rachmaninov" Why?

'Cause she was the peein'-est.

:D He's a funny guy.

You have to watch the puppies every second. If they start to look like they're about to pee, take them outside immediately. Also, right after meals and of course when they get up from a nap. (but you knew that one.)

2. I am going through the same thing with a 5 month old.
He poops outside, but pees wherever he sees fit. He's taking lessons from my other two though. Hopefully it won't be long!

3. Does he know how
to ask to go out? I had one like that, she was very bright and I could not figure out why she couldn't ask out like the others. One day I taught her. I would say, "potty outside" (she knew what that meant) and then help her to scratch the door (not the best idea) then I would let her out. Then back in. I did it a few times and she never, ever made another mistake.

4. Mine's bright but extremely independent
He's a mini American Eskimo. He sometimes does a bathroom dance so I know to let him out. Or he'll whimper. But quite a few times he doesn't give any warning. He just stands and lets go.

5. Never heard of a mini Eskimo!
Cool! Well, that is the only thing I could think of. Sorry. Maybe it will just take him a little longer. I know that retrievers take longer to "grow up" than other dogs and mine have certainly tried my patience in many ways. Maybe that is the reason.

10. What a great dog!
I have a standard American Eskimo. He was the easiest dog to train that I ever had. We had two others and he just followed them. Went in the house once and then we couldn't find him. He was in his kennel and he closed the door behind him! We have a little dog too and she was a different story. Maybe the little guys are harder. She was about 2 before she 'caught on' that she couldn't go wherever she wanted.

12. The girl at the humane society said he was a toy
But from what I understand, the toys are even smaller. Pippin is about 14 lbs.

He seems to get scared anytime we stop him from doing things - for instance, when we hold him back from chasing our cat. We don't hold him firmly or anything, but whenever we impede his motion he pees a little. He always seems to have a bit in reserve.

15. That might be right at the cut off
for a toy. Max is about 25lbs. Our little one is about 11lbs and she just can't 'hold it'. She's ok now unless I sleep too late but if I do she'll just go. Max will do some 'submissive' peeing occasionally. Actually, no one will believe this, but it's when one of my sons brings home a pretty girl. Not kidding, he just drips a little and turns over on his back.

16. Here's a link that explains it
He's definitely a mini.

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americaneskimo.htm

The length/weight breakdowns are as follows:

Toy: 9-12 inches (23-30cm) 6-10 pounds (2.4-4.5kg)
Miniature: over 12 (30cm) up to 15 inches (38cm) 10-20 pounds (4.5-9kg)
Standard: over 15 inches (38cm) up to 19 inches (48cm) 18-35 pounds (8kg-16kg)

So while your Eskie has a standard sized bladder, mine has a mini bladder. ;)

6. Put him on a schedule
Get up, go outside for five minutes, whether he pees or he doesn't. Feed him breakfast, take him outside for five minutes, whether he pees or he doesn't. Before going to work, take him outside for, you guessed it, five minutes, whether he does or doesn't. Come home from work... well, you get the picture.

Put him on a set schedule and praise the living daylights out of him when he pees outside. Don't make it a negative thing at all. Make him WANT to go outside to pee. He'll respond.

8. Remember, little dog = little bladder
You might put him on a more frequent schedule than even the one I've suggested, depending on his size.

9. Perhaps control his eating a bit more, and make sure the moment he's had
his dinner, he's trotted outside and wait for his blessed event.

Use wee wee pads, and place them in the locatins he pees in the most. If he misses the pad, (Nature's Miracle makes a really good one) then use it to soak up his pee pee to give him the right idea.

It's moot to take him outside AFTER an accident... he doesn't have to go anymore.

Re-start his training to where you're taking him outside every 2 hours, which is what we do with puppies, right? And keep working the pads.. they are effective.

Since I started them with the new puppy that we got a few months ago, even the older dogs, who used to be really lazy, have gotten into the habit of using them. It's been a nice change.

Remember simple praise, and simple correction. Simply express your disappointment and tell him what you expect from him. I know it sounds silly, but they understand simple concepts.

11. Couple of things
Take him to the same area outside every time you go out--he'll learn that this is the place to go. This really works. And it is a good idea to take him out frequently until he figures out what you want from him.

You could hang a bell (we have sleigh bells) on or near the door. Ring them every time you go outside, take his paw and have hime ring them, and he'll learn that that means outside time. (Don't do this if you have a dog that lives to be outside, because they'll drive you crazy asking to go out!)

14. A number of good suggestions in this thread
I will simply make an observation - males often take longer than females to master house training. Just a fact of life - whether its a matter of bladder control or attention span or what, I don't know but 30+ years of having dogs has shown me that it's true.

My last male dog, a Boxer, was probably a year and a half old (if not older) before he was completely on the program. He wasn't doing it to mark territory and he wasn't doing it as a control issue - he just kind of forgot a lot, I think. Luckily, he was very sweet and cute. It just took a lot of consistency and patience.

This is him. I loved the way he'd stick his tongue out just a little bit. It was so cute. Gosh, I miss him!
