Episode I: F. Nice visuals, but the acting and dialogue stunk and the story was not engaging. Too many fish eating each other and that goddamned Jar-jar made me want to scream. Plus Anakin was annoying as hell. The end was original, someone flies into space and blows up a big, evil thing. Who the hell was Darth Maul anyway?
Ep II, Attack of the Clowns: C+. Same criticism about acting and dialogue. The difference is that there was an interesting story to tie it all together. Yoda fight scene was hillarious. So, Yoda, what tactical advantage is there in a short light-saber for a short person? Presumably, the blade doesn't weigh anything and you're giving up a lot of reach.
Ep III ????? Ain't seen, but heard good stuff, mostly.
Ep IV, aka "Star Wars": A-, the first film which is now somehow the fourth film. Completely innovative. Sympathetic characters, a new mythology and a good vs. evil showdown where people fly into space to blow up a big, evil thing. The supporting cast was awesome. Luke is a bit of a whiner, but that is part of his character. Saw it in 1977 when it was a little longer than the pre-special edition release. While I miss the scene with Biggs and Wedge, at the time I did feel like the pacing was slow in the middle. The shortened version makes up for that.
Ep V, Empire: A. This was the best of the best. Vader was at his most evil and the force is becoming unraveled. The interaction between Leia and Solo was tremendous. Plus we find out that Vader is Luke's dad. One complaint, Luke and the occupants of the Falcon leave planet snowball at the same time. They then meet each other on Cloud City. That means each adventure took the same amount of time. I got the feeling that Luke was on swamp-world for months at least, while the Falcon's crew and only been gone a couple of days. The only way around it is if they spent months getting to cloud city or spent months once they were there. The first situation seems unlikely, because they never changed their clothes or hair and Solo never had a 5 o'clock shadow. Also, they never said anything to indicate they were in space forever.
Ep VI, Jedi: B-. I had given it a C+ prior to the Special Edition. The newer version cuts down on the goddamn Ewoks. The dialogue between Solo and Leia was a little more superficial than Empire. It was not as intense, overall. Still, the saber fight with Vader was excellent as was the struggle with the dark side it represented. I liked the Tolkien-esque parallel between the single-combat going on inside the DS and the mass fleet battle outside of it. As always, Solos flippant remarks are funny. "You're going to die here. Convenient, huh?" Okay, here we are on planet Pacific-Northwest. We'll split up. I will take the glow in the dark gold man this way, you take R2 over that paveded road. Same ending as Ep.IV and then Ep.I. It looses points for that.
