Operatic, tragic, wonderful. Emotionally engaging, even. The first hour was the most fun of any of the Star Wars films, just exciting, true cliffhanger stuff. Artoo actually had something to do and had some good kick-ass moments. Ewan Macgreggor was having such an obvious blast playing Obi-wan, making it a playful but powerful character. Hayden Christiansen was actually pretty good depicting Vader's turn to the dark side. The story dovetails into the original Star Wars movie nicely.
The whole last 90 minutes of the film elevates it to true myth... depicting visually and figuratively a descent into hell, the making of a deal with the devil, and ultimately getting screwed. I won't reveal plot details but Vader becomes the ultimate tragic character, and his final turning to the dark side has such a nasty biting irony. It is just so viscerally tragic, and becomes operatic from the moment order 66 is given (you'll understand when you see it.
A great movie, and I dare say I enjoyed it even more than Empire Strikes Back, which was my favorite of the other films.
