Poll question: John Malkovich. Master Thespian or just a Lucky Prick.
Edited on Wed May-18-05 06:58 PM by Bush_Eats_Beef
I'm watching "Con Air." His character is a friggin' CARTOON, and that wouldn't be half bad if it were a believable cartoon.

I think this guy sucks, but I want to know what YOU think.

3. Great Actor who sometimes is in bad movies
Probably makes them when he needs the money. He looked like a cartoon character in that movie because that no talent hack micheal bay was the director and his movies are cartoons.Plenty of good movies of his to choose from.

6. If you haven't seen 'Dangerous Liaisons', then you must
His performance in it is superb. He can be great in the right film.

11. Dunno if I'd call it 'superb'...
...but I'll have to admit, at least, that he was very good.

I can't recall having seen him in anything else.

23. I love that movie - he & Michelle Pfeiffer were hitting it while making it
so that must have something to do with the on screen chemistry... works pretty well :P

8. Depends--brilliant in "Making Mr. Right," crappy in "Of Mice and Men."
Edited on Wed May-18-05 07:24 PM by blondeatlast
Of course he had big shoes to fill in the latter and was a robot in the former.

10. I thought he and Clint Eastwood worked well "In the Line of Fire"
In fact, that is one of Clint's best performances as an actor--I think he is an extraordinary director.

12. Favorite was "True West" (play) on "American Playhouse"
Malkovich opposite Gary Sinise in the Sam Sheppard play. You won't see it again on PBS, now that PBS is the FOX News Ladies' Auxiliary, but you can check this out (on VHS) of the Portland Public Library.

13. Oh, also "Ripley's Game" is highly recommended
A Ripley far superior to the one attempted by what's-his-name guy.

15. YES.
I actually thought they were BOTH really good, though.

That's Damon's best role.

14. He's not my favorite actor by a long shot, so...
...I guess my vote is: depends on the movie.

But...check out these films:

"Dangerous Liaisons"
"In the Line of Fire"
"Mary Reilly"
"Con Air"
"Knockaround Guys"

And do not miss "Rounders", where he plays a Russian with a particularly vicious streak.

16. He's one of those Holly Hunter type's.
So damn impressed with himself, and the performance he's showing me, that I'm supposed to feel uneducated, and prole if I don't like it. It's not that he is in any way bad, it's just that I'm too stupid to know ART when I see it.

22. Bingo! And I'll bet they all had an acting teacher who told them
how great they were. I actually heard Sean Penn say on the Actors Studio something like "If you want entertainment, get a 8 ball and a couple of hookers." I live in real life. Why the hell am I going to pay to watch a millionaire act this shit out so he can feel like an artist. Like Michael Cain said, drama is fun, comedy is the high wire act.

24. I think that's the problem I have with Malkovich...
...he's "So damn impressed with himself," and if he's NOT, that's the vibe I get from watching him anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Plus, I've known a few "Malkoviches" in my life...same facial expressions, same droll sarcasm, same creepy monotone in their voice...and they were NOT likable people.

20. Honestly, I Bet He Does Even Better On Stage & In An Ensemble
which, I believe, is where he got started.

He's got a big presence and has studies how to use it. A lot depends on the director and who he's got to bounce stuff off of.

21. When I saw the trailer for "Con Air', I honestly thought it was a spoof...
from the creators of "Airplane" Eventually I realised that piece of shit was intended to be taken seriously.

Don't be so hard on John. Once Robert DeNiro gleefully started appearing in garbage, all other serious actors seemed to take it for a go signal.

25. This morning a DJ was talking about DeNiro's "bad flicks"...
...saying that he spent his "political capital" from movies like "Raging Bull" and "Goodfellas" when he made his...er..."lesser" films. Sometimes it's art, sometimes it's just a paycheck. Even DeNiro needs a paycheck now and then.

But even though he made a few less-than-stellar flicks, I doubt that DeNiro considered making them his "mandate"...
