Colombian painter creates art out of Abu Ghraib pics

(Norw. translation)

The Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero (73) aren't known for doing political art, but has made a series of paintings over the pictures of cruel maltreatment of prisoners in Abu Ghraib.

(snip)
Apart from a series of pictures from the Colombian civil war, Botero is mostly known for his round and sensual human bodies, often depicted in natural situations. He's also made a number of sculptures.

(snip)

The 73 year old artist explains his new found interest in political art with a comparison to Picasso.

- If he hadn't painted his picture «Guernica», the Basque village would have been a footnote in war history today.

3. Ah, thanks. I'll go have a look.
A lot of interesting stuff, art wise, goes down in Colombia, it seems :-)

I remember reading about a Colombian cartoonist creating a super hero series out of JPII earlier this year. Rodolfo Leon Valencia was the name.

Didn't want to bring another controversy into the debate at the time JPII died, but here it is.
