What is your favorite Simon & Garfunkel song?
Now that we've done the Beatles and Stones to death... :)

I'm subbing for a lady with a great CD collection, and have been grading papers to the 3-disc S & G set (dark green cover). I'd forgotten how astonishingly good they are.

After much consideration (and "Graduate" fans will go postal on me), I've decided my favorite track by them is "America."

Why, you may ask. It is lyrically witty and literate like songs such as "The Dangling Conversation" "At the Zoo" and "Mrs. Robinson," but also has the soaring emotional heft and melodic splendiforousness of "For Emily Whenever I May Find Her" "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Scarborough Fair." It's also wistful yet hopeful in the way Simon and Garfunkel excel at ("Old Friends" "59th Street Bridge Song"), and not as pessimistic as "Richard Corey" "I Am A Rock" or "Sound of Silence." (I know: sacrilege!)

So, everyone else: faves, and why?

1. The Boxer
I love that 3-disc set... used to have it, but it got stolen :grr:

Anyway, that's my favorite because it's the first song by them I knew. I love so many of their songs, though...

16. I had NEVER heard that song until I heard the "Garden State" soundtrack
I was amazed that I could have missed that one. What a great song.

5. "America" and "The Boxer".
During my lonely teenage days I'd play the Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits LP frequently.

10. Bridge Over Trouble Water
I am not a ballad person, particularly, but I like Art's soaring vocals on that one.

Me and Julio Down at the Schoolyard

I like much of Simon's solo work, particularly Graceland, his best stuff.

11. Bookends Theme, although very short is still one of my favorites
Time it was and what a time it was.
A time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you

A close second would be America or Kathy's Song.

I'm also a huge fan of Simon's original Songbook album.

12. Too hard to choose
I bought their "Complete Works" collection last year, 'cause I wanted to get some sort of compilation but realized I love all of their albums too much to not have them all!

Some of my favorites: "The Boxer", "The Only Living Boy in New York", "You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies", "A Hazy Shade of Winter", "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night", "Old Friends", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "The Dangling Conversation", "Flowers Never Bend with Rainfall", "A Most Peculiar Man", "A Church Is Burning" (from their live album from a couple years back), and "The Sun Is Burning." My favorite is either Bookend or Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme.
