1. I am right there with you, Matcom.
I think it is a great, great thing. If it inspires just one person to do for someone else, the mission has been accomplished.

Plus, it gives me some kick ass ideas for my own home.

3. I love watching it, too.
It's nice to see something productive coming from reality TV.

4. Corporatism at work

Public relations at work. An hour-long advertisement.

Annoying production values.

Suck-ass host on uppers - even if they're his own.

Charity is what you do for no or minimal self-promotion, this is just thinly disguised advertising.

Spending incredible amounts for a few people is not the same as benefitting the community at large.

And I find the parasitical, exploitive emotionalism disgusting.

5. they are helping people
we start with one, it spreads to MANY

TV shows need to make $. that isn't ALWAYS evil

i, frankly, shop at SEARS FOR this promotion and thank them every time i visit.

don't help ONE person next time if you can't help them ALL :eyes:

6. The problem is

by maximizing - for the showmanship effect - the amount spent over the fewest possible people, the least overall benefit results.

Never said it was evil - just not charity. If the show's rating decline sufficiently, will Sears continue its so-called charity activities anyway ?

Shop anywhere you like.

Its the balance of benefits over costs that's the problem. How many people could be benefitting if similar resources - money and manpower - where used that they use to beild virtual palaces for one family ?

7. if someone helps ONE person in this day and age
its better than 99.9% of the rest of the fuckers out there

sorry. i refuse to be that much of a jerk my whole life. typically, the people on this show DESERVE it 10-fold

better ONE than NONE

9. I don't know how to measure 'deserve'

much less multiple it by 10

And better multiple than one overdone.

It's a distraction and a salve. Makes too many people think enough is being done by overdoing and OVERpublicizing a spectacle.

13. Ah, the sign of a nuanced mind

Labeling - so you can dismiss - someone with whom you disagree.

Time to go back to your oddity reporting.
