iBook G4 and Panther review
Just gave both a good tst drive today. First the iBook G4--what a nice laptop! The keyboard was slid, no bouniciness to the keys as I typed, the mousepad worked liek a charm. The monitor is very good, and the 12 inch Powerbook actually seems a bit smaller--probably due to the different cases. The iBook G4 came loaded with Os X Panther, it's very, very fast. Apps only took several bunces (or less) to launch, the Expose is really useful when you have lots of apps open at once, and I like the new Finder layout. It works like iTunes and iPoto--your apps, hard drive, documents, music and iPod are all on the left side of the Finder window. Any removablle device can be ejected by hitting the little triangle by the icon.

I didn't get to try out the File Vault, but Fast Userswitching was on--sweet! Apple did an outsyandin job on both products.I'm going to buy the new iBok after Christmas--for once I don't want to be confined to a desktop, and I do want to have a wi-fi network to get rid of these stupid wires. And if I get impatient, I could get the eMac for $799 and be just as happy. Win-win all around. :)

2. I installed Panther on an old iMac
it works just fine. Desktop Manager, a pager didn't work very well, but I am sure the guy who makes it will be updating. I love expose.

3. I love my iBook
though it's just the G3 little brother version. Don't have panther but the laptop was worth every penny. Beautiful 14" screen. I can only imagine how groovin' the G4 iBook is.

4. I attended a local release party
and was very impressed. Now I'm covetous. :-)

They had two employees "videoconferencing" with each other on Powerbooks with a wireless connection. The image quality was superb.

Unfortunately, they aren't getting any G4 iBooks in till next week, which is just as well, because I couldn't afford one anyway. Still, I had fun playing with the computers that they did have on display.

5. I can't wait to get Panther
but I have to wait a few more days, I ordered it.

I hope the Panther UI is faster on my old G3, I'm pretty sure the Finder will be but I wonder about everything else. I'm curious if FileVault will be able to work smoothly in the background on my slow computer; presently I use Crypt2 and shell scripts (for openssl enc) to do encryption, I might just continue with that because it's fast and easy.

8. ye it will be faster
each machine at CompUSA has Panther installed, and they are all much faster. of course the G5 is crazy fast to begin with, but the G3 iBooks were really improved.

6. When Is Apple Coming Out With A G5 Powerbook?
I'd love to switch this 4K Dell/XP Notebook out so I could listen to Audio again after their "updates" and talk to someone that grew up with the English language and understands the terms.

I'm not a snob by any means, but I do have a problem when "Customer Support" demands my Credit Card number in broken English before they check to see if I bought a warrenty covering this stuff.

7. good question
you can betyour bottom dollar that somewhere in Cupertino, Apple engineers are working hard on a G5 Powerbook. It's a matter of when a suitable version for the Powerbook can be tested and givna very good run through.
