Edited on Fri May-13-05 09:48 PM by Longgrain
Since I know it can be difficult to be "The Newbie" at times.

So if you're new to the DU Lounge, come on over and introduce yourself. There's been a lot of mad happenings lately, but we're mostly regular folks around here.

So come on over and say hi, and perhaps some of us "older" posters will say hi back.

:hi:

1. Here's an old-timer with a pre-emptive "hello"
Edited on Fri May-13-05 09:55 PM by MissMillie
Please come on in and say "hi". We'd love to get to know you.

Me, I'm a 40ish female from New England who just lost a lot of weight and also discovered jogging. I'm going to run my first 5K next Saturday. (Oh yeah, I forgot to say--I'm a bad-ass.)

I have 2 teenage boys (actually one is mine and one I took in last winter).

I have 3 cats, Millie (my namesake), Siouxsie, and Cosmo.

I work at a big college.

I love food.

2. I'm not new or newer but I'll chime in
I hang around here a lot and I don't know if anyone knows I exists. I don't spend too much time in the lounge and really don't speak up too much. Most times people express my thoughts better than I.

your hair whose Star Trek episode was pre-empted with the NBA finals so they went out for the first time in a year. You need to stop limiting your attention to the desperate and the sad in an effort to boost your own self esteem. You've forgotten what a confident man sounds/feels/thinks/melts you like.

61. Sure.
And furthermore, you'd prefer to dole out your little one-liners as the message itself than to elaborate in a way that makes it coherent. Just making us crave more, aren't you? More of the vocal stylings of Bok. We have to feast our eyes on whatever crumbs he bestows us from his mighty brain. We have to savor the little thrills although sometimes, Sparky, more is more.

15. Hi, y'all!
:hi:

This seems like a good idea. Thank you!

I've lived in Los Angeles for...well, a long time. Ever since I was the only survivor of the Donner Party, I think. And I'm still working on a sure-fire money-making scheme involving a Donner Party fast food franchise...

But I grew up in Upstate South Carolina, so I still have the "y'alls" and stuff. The lovely crop of Fundamentalists we had there explains why you often find me posting in the Atheists & Agnostics Group. I escaped South Carolina by joining the Marines.

A lot of people ask about my user-name, which I also use on other boards. (Warning: I'm a history geek.) The "onager" is a wild ass, or donkey, which sort of symbolizes my basic Dem philosophy. It was also a catapult used by the Romans to hurl stones and flaming debris, which symbolizes what I enjoy doing to right-wingers. ;)

I love to travel and my job (aerospace) lets me do a lot of it. I've been all over Asia and Europe and lived in Saudi Arabia, from where I usually went straight to Amsterdam ASAP...

I hate talking about myself, so I'll just shut up and say I hope to see all of you around this lunatic asylum!

18. I'm still a newbie
But folks are slowly starting to get to know me.

I'm 41.

I have a beautiful wife that I've been married to for almost 15 years.

We got two young 'uns, a 4 year old son and a 9 year-old daughter. They keep us hoppin'.

We live out in the sticks in Central Texas, in a small town about 25 miles SE of Austin.

We got way too many cats, and a couple of egg-layin' chickens.

I'm a warehouse operations manager by trade, but I'm going to be transitioning to facilities manager pretty soon, and it comes with a raise, too! Yay!

I really enjoy my limited time here on DU. You guys rock. Thanks for making DU an interesting and fun place to be when I'm online.

45. I'm still pretty new
Edited on Fri May-13-05 11:11 PM by unsavedtrash
I am a 36 year old lesbian who has been with the same amazing person for 10 years. I was born, raised, and currently reside in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I was raised by deeply southern Baptist family members. Some of whom belong to or have previously belonged to the KKK. When I was 18 my father found out I was gay and tried to shoot me. My mom kicked me out because she thought if one were gay then one must have AIDS, and I was homeless for a while. I can fit in to most groups but feel most comfortable alone or with my partner and a few friends. I cannot stand anyone bad mouthing Israel but I respect the opinions of others too. Too often it breaks down to Anti-Semitism and I really can't stand that. I am pro-death penalty when completely sure the person is guilty, I believe in the right to own guns but see no reason to have these monstrosities that people are saying they need for protection or hunting. I hate that everything is outsourced and feel that unions are very important in the work place. Including in the service industry. I love kids but can't stand groups of them. I think one should say please, thank you, and hold the door for the next person. I will remove the hat from a males head if he doesn't take it off when entering my home. I help my elders, my mom, and if humanly possible anyone else in need. I am pro-choice and nothing can make me change my mind about that issue. I want to get married to the woman I love. I want to call it marriage. I want it to be accepted by the United States and for it to happen in a religious setting. Tell me marriage isn't important to you when you and your loved one are not allowed to marry. I can't stand that little sac of shit in the white house. I wish he had been on that plane instead of John John. Though I wish GWB a long life now so he can live with the fuck ups that his administrations have caused so many. I think that there is a religious war against gay people. I voted for Kerry because I thought he could make some well needed changes but I should have campaigned and voted for Clark. I like the guy. I can get pissy and I often have a dark sense of humor. Tell me nicely if I am offending you and I will do everything in my power to never do it again. Unless you are a republican, then I will find your weak spot or "button" and mess with it constantly. I just graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. I enjoy tracking hate groups, white power groups, and rabid nationalists. I like to know what makes these people tick. I like to debate them and then make fun of them because I know more about their supposed beliefs than they do and can debate them under the table. I am an INFP. I like to be alone a lot of the time. I love my animals and I love the South.
I think American's need to look at companies hiring immigrants on the cheap instead of ganging up on people who are only guilty of working to support their families.

74. So little ol' me:
I've got a 4 year old dog and a two year old son. They are best friends.

In DU time I am 5 months old. Izzybeans was born in January.

My wife tells me to pick up my socks on occasion but she loves my cooking.

I am a graduate student and so I will talk at length about things I do not understand using words that I can not comprehend. :9 But I give it a shot anyhoo.

I like to laugh and most of my posts are snarky, satirical, or just plain nonsensical.

I have a bad habit of watching the watchers watch us and believe that DUers should be proud that they have such fanatical anti-fanatics.

I am a thread killer. If you are a donor then a simple search will demonstrate that many of my posts wind up as the last in the thread. Like any sociologist I apparently choose my profession because I secretly want to learn how to make friends. Being a thread killer probably means my net competence is about a 2 on the EQometer. So implicitly I do what I do because I want to learn how to play well with others. :+

I'm from a cornfield in Indiana but live amongst the strip malls of Jersey.

Let's see what else...I have glasses on right now. Sometimes I take them off. But only when I haven't lost all my contacts.

Did I say I have a dog?

That is me in a bombshell.

77. I've been here a while, met some cool folks, not met others
some have drifted a bit, come around less, while I try to cut down my time (computer addictive)

Sometimes I feel rather new, sometimes not.

The influx of very cool seeming new folks today was a real boost, got me feeling optimistic; several really powerful photo-stories today too that gave me hope of getting the point across.

Everything ebbs and flows

Prosit

71. Hi!
I've been registered for awhile but don't post much, just enjoy reading.

I'm 43.

I'm married and will celebrate my 10th anniversary with my wonderful husband next Friday.

No kids, just a fur-kid, the psycho-kitty Tucker.

I work in the Datacenter of a large university in Mid-Missouri. I've been there for 25 years. We have lots of famous alums like Sheryl Crow, Brad Pitt (though he didn't graduate), and unfortunately, Ken Lay. We have a great journalism school, vet school, med school, and engineering school. We also have a very beautiful campus.

I'm a Cardinals fan and I live and die with the Chiefs every football season.

My views are pretty liberal, although I tend to think of them as just being logical. I picked up most of my views from my mother and maternal grandfather which drives the rest of my very conservative family nuts.

Was born in Kansas, and despite all the evidence to the contrary, not all Kansans are idiots.

72. Hi from the Left Coast
I'm from Maine but living in the SF Bay Area. I've also lived in several other rabidly blue areas of rabidly blue states. I blame my parents. Of all the places I've lived 'away,' Boston is my favorite.
Also a Red Sox fan -- one nice thing about living here is we can get tickets easily for the A's series. There is a huge Sox fan base and I swear we outnumbered the locals at one game last year. Next week is RED for me.

DU is a haven of sanity in this weird neocon world. I don't mind the raucous brawls and goofiness of the lounge. I've always found it quite entertaining. In the more serious forums, I learn something new all the time.

I won't be as candid here as I am in real life but I won't lie about anything either!

90. Thanks Longgrain...
I don't really see what the big problem is, everyone here has treated me very well. Sure, people don't necessarily respond to all of my posts, but I don't really expect them to. It's completely normal to interact with people whom you know (either because they've been online a while or because you've actually met them in person) more than with people who randomly appear out of nowhere. But anyway, thanks for asking. :) So a bit about me:

I'm 26. I live in Nebraska, as I have for most of my life. But I'm hoping it's temporary. I am a licensed attorney and today I'm getting a Master's degree. I just started sending resumes to get my first "real" job. I desperately want to live in Southern California. I eventually want to do something political, but I haven't figured out exactly what yet.

I have 1 sister, 2 stepsisters, and 7 nieces/nephews. There are only 4 democrats in my immediate family...everyone else is a Dobson-loving republican. I'm single. I have a cat named Riley. I'm completely addicted to the West Wing and Nip/Tuck.

101. Okay, I'll post a little about me
Single (I like it that way) female living in Denver, CO. I have 3 dogs, 1 cat (indoor), and 12 Koi in a pond outside. It's my busy time of year because I'm obsessed with gardening. I spend WAY too much money on plants and stuff every year. But, since it's my therapy I guess it's worth it.

I am the only liberal in my family (at least my siblings - I do have a neice and nephew that are libs), so it's a bit difficult at times. We have a rule that we DON'T discuss politics. It gets much too heated. I'm adjusting now to life without my parents. I took care of a lot of things for them for a number of years and I lost my dad 5 years ago and my mom almost 2 years ago. It definitely changes the dynamics in the family, so we're still figuring it out.

I despise GWB and all his friends. That's all I can say on that subject because just typing it made my blood boil.

I'm very happy to have found this site. After the election I was so depressed and I certainly couldn't discuss it with my family so coming here saved my sanity.

If you reply and I don't respond back it's because I've gone out to the yard. It's pond cleaning day and it will take pretty much take the whole day so once I'm out there, that's it until tonight or tomorrow.

106. I very recently joined, but don't post much.
Especially when I'm supposed to be doing other things, like study!

I'm a female college student (rising senior!) living in the South, even though I'm a born and raised northerner. Katherine Harris went to my school, which makes me want to cry every time I think about it. I'm majoring in history and art history, neither of which are particularly useful, but both of which give me an excuse to talk pretentiously around people I'm trying to impress. At the moment, I'm planning on going to law school, hopefully after a stint in Teach for America.

I enjoy novels, Desperate Housewives, movies, classical music, and sushi. I don't like neocons, GWB, either of my Senators, or final exams. My intense hatred of the first three is much greater than my mild dislike of the fourth.

Let me introduce myself. I'm a female in her late twenties from New Orleans. I'm a graphic designer who enjoys following and participating in progressive politics, good food (i'm in the right town for that), music, fitness, photography, pets and poker.

I've been politically active for about a year and it's been pretty frustrating. The DU has really helped me stay focused and driven.

121. okay, so maybe you are not brilliant,
but your french impressionism is.

is that your boston? awwww. looks like she's begging for the tennis ball. i ended up with two very different boston personalities - one is a spastic jump-in-your-lap people dog, and the second has a "i'm on the wrong side of the door" squirrel fixation and eats the tinsel off my christmas trees (she spends december looking like a bicycle handle with legs). i adopted them both. i rescued nikki the redneck tinsel dog from a couple that kept her confined to a cage because they were breeding miniature schnauzers, nikki thought the poor things were chew toys, and thus they kept her in a cage. Lady, the frantic canine party favor, was living with a family with dog-hostile neighbors - she sustained brain trauma from a car accident, so she's a little loopy, but you would never know unless you caught her gnawing the toes off my socks, or burying pizza crusts.

122. I love Boston Terriors
When I was growing up I had a french bulldog. Those look a lot like the Bostons. Right now I have a 2 year old chocolate lab and a 10 year old persian cat. That's hilarious about the dog chewing the toes off of your socks and burrying pizza crust. First time I've heard of those habits.

My dog finisted chewing a hole in our fence before escaping and chasing an elderly neighbor of mine around earlier this week.

I couldnt find the picture that you were referring to in the Jazz Funeral photos. Which page is it on? Oh by the way, it's much easier to view all the photos by selecting the slideshow option.

Also, since you're in the area, please check out --> www.beaucoupblues.com

125. i didn't know about the louisiana forum,
i'll try to keep up with it. i'm actually in the florida panhandle, so new orleans is just a four hour drive away. in your activism gallery - 3/19 2nd anniversary of the iraq war, i'm on page 5, pic #5450. kind of weird...you have photographic proof that i am not living a painful truman show existence in walton county, fl. i will try to make beaucoup blues - sounds exciting, democracy rising!

what kind of fence did your lab chew through? it's difficult to explain exactly how bizzarre lady's behavior is (pizza crusts, socks)- i think the brain damage made her an eternal puppy: doesn't recognize her own name - constantly carries around a blanket/sock/towel like linus from peanuts - i wish i had pictures of the time she ate an entire 10" cucumber right off the vine.

have you tried that pizza kitchen outside the french market yet? pricey but good.

123. Long time lurker here.
Hi Lounge!

First of all, thank you to everyone here who got me through the election last November. I didn't post, but I was here laughing, (and I *really* needed that release.)

I'm 34 and live in Los Angeles. I've been married for almost 13 years (child bride.) I have two sons, 9 and 7, and a new daughter. Last year, I went back to school and discovered my political consciousness. Yes, I was a late bloomer. I love coming to LBN every morning....I'm up early to read it and I'm a better person for it.

I'll be graduating next year and I hope to get accepted to UCLA Law, specifically the critical race concentration. It's an ambitious goal, and one I never would have though possible a few years ago.

That's a taste of me. Thanks for starting this thread...otherwise I'd have remained in the shadows.

124. Yep, I too was hear around the time of the campaign
and almost gave up DU entirely after the election.

Then I discovered the Lounge, and it really pulled me through.

Since then I've made quite a few friends. Stick around and get to know us. We're fun.

:hi:
