Canadians how much are cigarettes and beer up there eh?
A local talk show host was talking about univeral ("socialized") medicine and a caller called in and said that cigarettes were $6-70 a carton, gas was $7 a gallon, and beer was extremely high priced too. Another caller mentioned that that is in Canadian dollars and then went on to say something else. The first caller said that these prices were the result of socialized health care.

I didn't believe it but I wanted to check.

2. When I lived in Michigan, I shopped in Canada...
because everything was a lot cheaper: cigs, beer, groceries, and gasoline. I fell in love with Canadian Tire, too! Great prices and great service up there, too.

3. quick conversion
If the prices are in CAD, smokes are about $56 US/carton - which isn't THAT far above the $40 /carton you pay in michigan (and that's the cheapies)

Gas is probably closer to $4 US - but it all depends on location. The northern less inhabited parts will likely be much more.

4. Gas in Vancouver varies between 93 cents/litre - 1.05/litre
There are about 4 litres per US gallon.

I don't smoke, but I would guess cigarettes to be about $7-$8/pack - but that is a guess.

I don't buy much beer either, but the last time I bought a 6-pack of Corona it was about $11.

You can find BC liquor prices here:

http://www.bcliquorstores.com/en/products?gKey=4&mKey=90&pp=20&by=name&asc=1&pg=1

Canada does have 'sin taxes' on tobacco, liquor and gas. They do go to support health care, infrastructure etc.

As a balance, the maximum health care premium in BC for a single person is $52/month.

5. Net it sounds like a good deal
That is pretty high on beer but many areas of the US have $7 packs of cigarettes or so I hear (here in Richmond they are $2.50-$3). Gas is high too but not to the extreme this yahoo was making it out to be. $52 a month? Damn that sounds great. You can buy more coverage if you want too, right?

7. You can, but you get a lot for that $52 dollars
It covers all your trips to the doctor. Operations, diagnostic procedures etc.

It doesn't cover: upgrades to private hospital rooms (unless medically necessary), medicine (unless you're in the hospital), dental, glasses, massage therapy, chiropractic care.

6. Smokes are about $10
(for a 25 pack, of course), and that IS because of socialized medicine. I'll pay the extra $2.50/pack and have health care, thank you very very much. Gas is at .90/liter, beer isn't high priced. It starts at about $25 for a 24 pack, and goes up to about $40, depending on your brand of choice.

Canada has a higher standard of living than the US.
