Just a couple of friendly reminders.
Edited on Fri May-13-05 09:44 AM by Bouncy Ball
Meant in the nicest of ways.

Seriously.

Ok, first reminder, there's a button that says "Hide Thread" that's at the bottom left of every opening post in a thread. If you find that thread really annoying, or boring, or disgusting, or whatever, just hit that hide thread feature and it disappears. In fact, feel free to hide this one if you want! It won't hurt my feelings any.

I used it liberally (get it? LOL) during the World Series because I simply don't give a shit about baseball.

I'm sure the baseball fans here appreciated me doing that instead of starting umpteen threads to bitch about all the baseball threads, didn't you? Plus I didn't want Will Pitt hunting me down and killing me for saying "Red WHO? Red Jocks?"

Another thing: this place was a voluntary deal. It's just a message board on the internet. I used to read the message boards on eBay. For a couple of days. Found them excrutiatingly boring. Wondered why I even spent a couple of days reading them. So I left. Simple.

The lounge is supposed to be a place on DU where you can.....lounge! Joke around, maybe not be as serious as in other forums on GD, a place to say hi, hang out. When it's more pain than pleasure, it's time to either hide threads or read other parts of DU for a while or maybe take a break altogether. People do it all the time. I'm thiking of one DUer who took a break of a month or so recently then came back. We were happy to see him back and he was happy to be back. No biggie.

PLEASE NOTE I AM *NOT* TELLING ANYONE TO LEAVE. I am simply giving a friendly reminder that if a place that is voluntary is stressful and not fun, no one is holding any guns to anyone's head.

Happy lounging and can someone post something funny in this thread?

If you don't, Miss Lulu will eat you.

4. Sometimes the rules regarding civility and respect are oppressive
If those rules weren't in place, people could say, You're a domineering bitch" instead of picking on someting as stupid as physicality.

14. You are so correct
The hide and ignore features are wonderful things.

So is simple human decency. But you can't click a button and make that happen.

People make their own choices about their behavior.

And happy friday to all DUers, even the ones I don't "get." :hi:

18. You can't get simple human decency in real life by clicking a
button, either.

It's not that simple anywhere.

I have one or two DUers on ignore. That's another feature I didn't mention, just because I wasn't sure it was cool to talk about that. But it's VERY helpful for those who like that feature. People have to be pretty hardcore for me to put them on ignore, but anyone can use it for anyone they choose. Have hundreds on ignore!

Happy Friday to you, too!

25. You are correct again
I think part of the problem might be that some posters get all of their socialization here. So it becomes more important for them to feel in control on the board.

I believe if you have friends in real life this place is just someplace to visit occasionally. And that's how I use it.

Now I'm off to have lunch with a friend after buying horse/chicken/dog feed. And no, I am NOT buying cat food. So there. And we are not eating the animal food. I'm having fried mushrooms.:)

I know you are trying to be a mediator, and you are good at it, but please understand some folks have been hurt by the actions of a few, and that those people should not be excused from their behavior, even if you can ignore or hide their threads.

I haven't been personally hurt, but I know others who have been, and I care about them.

27. Well, somehow they are going to have to either work it out with
those who hurt them (PM?) or find some way to let it go. Or email one of the administrators, if that's the way they want to go.

I'm having a long lunch meeting myself in about an hour, so I better get ready to go.

16. my pleasure...
6-year-old and a 4-year-old are upstairs in their bedroom...

"You know what?" Says the 6 year old, "I think it's about time we started cussing." The 4-year-old nods his head in approval. The 6-year-old continues, "When we go downstairs for breakfast, I'm gonna say something with hell and you say something with ass." The 4-year-old agrees with enthusiasm.

When the mother walks into the kitchen and asks the 6-year-old what he wants for breakfast, he replies,

"Aw, hell, Mom, I guess I'll have some Cheerios."

WHACK! He flies out of his chair, tumbles across the kitchen floor, gets up, and runs upstairs crying his eyes out, with his mother in hot pursuit, slapping his rear with every step. His Mom locks him in his room and shouts,

"You can stay there until I let you out!" She then comes back downstairs, looks at the 4-year-old and asks with a stern voice, "And what do YOU want for breakfast, little man?"

"I don't know." He blubbers, "But you can bet your fat ass it won't be Cheerios!"

21. I do, too.
When I see someone posted somewhere and it says "Ignored," curiosity gets the better of me.

But hide thread is great, just removes the conversation from my screen completely.

It also removes any justification I might have for bitching about said threads.

29. I'm going off topic here,
but I think the problem is more than cliques in the lounge. I hope i can explain this clearly so here goes.

DU A (cool kid) starts a thread. DU M (uncool kid) responds with an alternative point of view, shall we say? DU A's cool friends DU B, DU C & DU D jump in & defend DU A. They must pm each other is all I can think of. DU X, DU Y & DU Z (uncool kids) would like to defend DU M (uncool) but figure they'll just get reamed by the cool kids & so leave DU M hanging out to dry.

Anyone who is at all aware can practically pick who is going to show up & defend DU A. It will be the same ones over & over.

An example: if CL was attacked you could damn well bet P18 would show up. Little did I know the whole story. In fact, it's sort of made me wonder about some of the other alliances. :)

anyhoo, I see the problem is that the cliques in the lounge have created a group of friends who will take on anyone that attacks one of their own & it has spilled out into other forums.

34. Ok then in that case if there's a clear pattern of "ganging up"
so to speak, to attack others, then the admins need to get an email with details as to what has been noted.

You could also hit alert and include a note to mods explaining the pattern of behavior seen.

Or DU M's backers need to jump on in there! ;-)

...or it seems the whole place has turned on ya, do what I did and just leave for a couple months. And then when you do come back, the nasty stuff that pissed you off royally will have pased, but you will still see the familiar cowbell threads, Oasis threads and sex threads that were there before.

is that I don't have the financial resources to feed _that_ cat. I am the companion animal of _that_ cat's brother, Ginger, who eats only a special cat food made in Italy from 100 percent organically grown chicken. Our own healthily fed (and much adored) Ginger leaves us no financial resources for also feeding his ever-hungry brother, who would eat anything and everything (and yes, _that_ cat has even snagged goldfish out of our pond as a "cat snack.") It would be more  if it weren't so darned true!
