Freak Kid To Mom: Let's Play Jesus Says!
I took my daughter to the orthodontist and in the chair next to her (it's an open floor plan) sat a kid I would rather not see reach adulthood. That may sound harsh, but he scared the crap outta me and my daughter. Those of us who could hear him pretended we couldn't.

Conversation with Mom went something like this (in an entirely too loud tone of voice):

Kid: "Let's play Jesus says"

Mom: "No"

Kid: "Jesus says give me the car keys"

Mom: "No, I'm not giving you the keys"

Kid: "Jesus says go to the car and get my binder"

Mom: "No, I'm not going to the car"

Kid: "But Jesus said so and I want my binder"

Mom: "You'll have to wait"

Kid: "I don't want to wait, I'm too perfect to wait"

The dental tech returned and worked on his mouth for a few minutes, then left again.

Kid: "Mom, do you think I'm a narcissist?"

Mom: "Please don't ask me that"

Kid: "You know I'm perfect and that I'm a genius"

Mom: "You need to keep your voice down"

Kid: "No I don't, I can do whatever I want"

At this point, he starts speaking Latin (while looking around the room to see who was watching) and then the dental tech returned and said it was time to take some pictures of his mouth.

Kid: "The camera isn't worthy to take my picture"

:scared:

either a deranged child in need of severe care, or else shitty yuppie fuck parents who let him do whatever the hell he wants without any discipline.

9. Exactly -
she's allowed it; she sat there and acted sheepish...completely controlled by that kid. You could tell she's terrified of him.

Psychopaths happen, its not NECESSARILY the parent's fault, and if a parent has a kid with this aberration, its more a matter of sheer survival.

To get a good feel for the horror, read "We Need To Talk About Kevin", a novel about a woman and her psychopathic son. Heartbreaking, scary, gives a whole new perspective to the "oh its the parent's fault"

Also, read Dr Robert Hare's book "Without Conscience", (he is generally regarded as the world's foremost expert on Psychopathy)

edit: I goofed Dr Hare's first name. Fixed now

7. That one's going to be either a Republican politician or a serial killer.
Not that there's a lot of difference.

8. I have found that most of the time kids like this
are created, not born.

I call it The Roommate Syndrome - an adult (or adults) live with a child but there ain't no parenting going on.

yes sometimes, certainly, but there are also children who at a very young age exhibit a clear set of behaviors identified with psychopathy.

Dr Robert Hare (world reknowned expert in this field) explains the incidence of "born psychopaths" in his book "Without Conscience", and makes it clear that a psychopathic child can be born to vary good parents. It certainly can be affected by nurture, but nature plays a part that should not be minimized.

edit: I wanted to add that according to Dr Hare, the prognosis for psychopathy is not good. Same for most of the antisocial disorders, as far as I understand. Experts still don't understand what causes it, and usually, the psychopath is highly intelligent and absolutely not motivated to change.

It saddens me to see people taking the simplistic bash the mother route. Again I want to recommend "We Need To Talk About Kevin" a smashing good read and it will tear your heart out for the mother.

20. No not always
but I work with disabled kids and when they have behavioral 'issues', there is often a parent who just either gave up or never really tried to parent the child.

We were just talking about this today - kids who don't respond to polite requests because their parents have just yelled at them and hit them to get them to mind. We have more and more every year.

23. don't get me wrong, I'm aware there is a big price for lousy parenting
tortured kids can be destroyed for life (though as a tortured kid myself, I can say that for some reason, not all of us are lost forever. I was very concerned to be kind to other people, even from a young age. Anecdotal I know, but it does show an interesting contrast, I think)

24. Yes and I appreciate your perspective
But I try to hold on to the idea that all kids can be helped. I wouldn't be able to show up for work every day and do the best job I can teaching if I thought that some kids were just doomed to be 'bad' by genetics. And I have seen some really 'bad' kids turn around.

26. :HUGS:
and thank goodness for them that you are there! Very few people in this world have the gift you do!!!!!!

I was never a kid person myself, and due to the traumatic environment I lived through, I know I don't have maternal nurturing to give to a kid. Animals, good; kids? Nuh-uh.

And I believe that the intractible cases like I am talking about are in the minority. Many more behavioral problems stem from bad to horrific parenting.

right back at ya.

You do have a gift - of experience. Think of what you can share because of what you experienced. Stranger things have happened, you know.

19. Exactly what I was going to say
He doesn't have to be like this forever; it's a cliche to say, "With treatment, there is hope," but that fits exactly here.

For those here saying she should have severely disciplined him in the office, I have to ask you if you think the resulting reaction from the kid would have been worth the microsecond's worth of satisfaction from hearing those words come from the mother's mouth. She has to live with him nearly 24/7; you got away with a few hours once in your lifetime.
