1. I had something similar
It turned out to be a bad cable. We spent hours downloading new drivers and troubleshooting all sorts of shit, but never did check the hardware.

It could be a bad monitor, too. Do you have another computer you can hook it up to and check it?

5. Ok...tried it...
no luck...still off...I think it may be the monitor itself...it is quite old and I got it from a DOD surplus sale...

6. I've seen this when the cable wasn't seated properly
Into the computer. It could be the video on the computer has gone south, assuming that you have onboard video installed directly on the motherboard. If so you can get a video card, install it onto the machine and disable the onboard video in the BIOS.

For video cards you can get AGP video card which is installed into its own slot or a PCI card (which goes in a PCI) slot.

Not knowing the configuration of your computer, it's hard to say what you'll need.

Always try the easy things first, pushing in cables and rebooting machines is the first step then you can try reseating cards and RAM. After that you are looking at spending money.

7. If you can, borrow a friend's monitor and/or PC.
Put your monitor on his/her system, and vice-versa. See if the problem follows the CPU, the cable, or the monitor. That's your most sure-fire way of pinpointing the problem.
