Least essential repeating Simpson's character in show's history
What regularly appearing character could easily have been eliminated when the show was at its peak and no-one would have cared, i.e. viewers wouldn't have complained, critics wouldn't have taken notice, etc.

I call Milhouse's parents:

Their only function seems to have been to establish that they were pretty much the reason why Milhouse became as f*cked up as he is.

They were pretty much background anyway and the attempt to give them more depth with the divorce plotline flopped because "who really cares about Kirk and Luanne?".

3. No way...they are great....
Kirk and Luanne are great recurring characters. Her new life as a swinging divorcee....his pathetic attempts to retain or get some dignity as a middle aged single schlub..."Can I get a Feeling".

I would go for one of the two cops. Cheif Wiggum needs a peaut gallery but it only needs to be one of them.

5. Maybe Kang and Kodos
They don't have ties to the other characters. Anyone else offers background information on why other characters are so effed -- such as Skinner's mother (that's PRINCIPAL Skinner, not our Skinner) and the aforementioned Milhous's parents. Raphie seems irrelevant but then shows how goofy Chief Wiggums is.

20. It should have collapsed years ago.
The show stopped being good in the late '90s, yet it's still on.

10. I don't think there is one. Everyone serves some sort of purpose,
silly as it may be. Simpson's is genius.

12. Jasper
Aside from setting up some Grampa jokes, he's dispensable. His biggest moment was probably the Ice Man bit.

OK, you've convinced me that Jasper has had enough moments to merit keeping him. So let's dump Arnie Pye instead.

I love the DVDs with commentary. They are nearly as funny as the shows.

24. The DVD commentary is pretty good
This little nugget re: The Last Temptation of Homer aka the episode with Homer's infatuation with his co-worker at the plant (Mindy).

When Werner Klemperer appeared to voice Col. Klink (which he portrayed in Hogan's Heros) as Homer's guardian angel he actually had to be coached by the writing staff on how to do the role as he had long forgotten the mannerisms or even the speaking style of the Col Klink.
