But, yeah, if we had them here and if one was coming, I'd probably shut down.

We have surge protectors and an insurance policy on our plugs from our electric company. If my computer gets killed, I get a new one. Duckie

5. But what about lost time, as far as work and stuff?
That is what killed me more than the expense. Having to go two weeks each time without a computer. My laptop is my lifeline to my place of employment, though.

3. YES. I had to replace TWO MODEMS...
I was two-times the fool. Lightning popped the first one...I sent the computer off to get it fixed. One week later, lightning popped the second one. I always unplug my computer at the first sign of lightning, now.

7. Don't forget to disconnect the phone line from the computer.
That can ZAP the computer also.

13. they usually come integrated with those outlet surge protectors
so you can plug in and protect both your computer and the phone line. you'll need an extra length of phone line to run from the surge protector and your computer.

But I do shut everything down if I think we're going to lose power. Then again, I have PG&E and some ancient line-age to deal with.

I had to as a matter of protocol at a previous job that I had. Now it is just habit.

14. If I remember, I'll disconnect the iMac
My iBook has an Airport card, though, so I'll just go wireless/battery on that and keep working.
