Monkees Fans?
I love them. Don't give me shit either. This thread is for FANS- haters can stay off my tip.

I collect the stereo and mono mixes of their vinyl LPs, in fact.

My favorite LP's are:

MONO "More Of"

The Japanese Stereo "Pisces"

The MONO "Pisces"

"The Birds the Bees & the Monkees"

Whatz yer favorite song, episode, or LP?

26. She, I'm gonna buy me a dog, Daydream Believer ...
my bro and I grew up with the Monkees! I still hear these songs going round in my head occasionally. They had some great songwriters on board. Mike Nesmith was no slouch either. "Last train to Clarksville" is a pretty decent rendition of an anti-war song.

-This may sound strange but- my mother and aunt were huge fans and not only did they take us kids to the reunion concert in the 80s but we also used to go camping and hang their pictures on trees and play their music :9 Suprisingly, I still like it!

Edit: oops, favorite songs are "Randy Scouse Git" and "Shades of Gray"

Including "For Pete's Sake" (the closing TV theme), "Pleasant Valley Sunday"

...They play on all the tunes on the Headquarters & Pices LPs...

But you are right- it does not matter-plenty of great acts used session players & outside song-writers...

25. "The Porpoise Song" and "Shorty Blackwell"
were totally out there, very, very, just very heavy. The movie "Head" was truly hip, and if you think about it, the idea of a band that wasn't a band, that was a show about a band, that "became" a band...very cutting edge in retrospect.

Fave Monkees: Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork.

Fave Album: PACJ

I think they were unfairly derided in the 60s. The sacrosanct groups from the 60s and 70s like Led Zepplin are now used to sell cars and other consumer items.

61. Door into Summer - Nesmith wrote that one. "Salesman" is another CLASSIC.
'Salesman' being anti-drug and whose inclusion in the classic "The Devil and Peter Tork" episode nearly had it banned from being aired.

:wow:

"The Devil..." is probably their best TV episode ever made, though season 2 in general is FAR better than season 1.

Saw them in concert twice when I was 14. My friend was in their video running through the crowd trying to get us in the first row (which she did!) I taped every episode then and even had a petition the year before they put them on MTV to get them back on TV. Isn't that weird? Anyway... that was a loooooong time ago. I do have to say that I appreciate them getting airplay on Sirius satelite radio.

I especially love the darkness of Pleasant Valley Sunday.

I audiotaped every show on my big ol' stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder. I remember the day my big brother (who worked for a Japanese import-export firm) came to the house, saw the tape recorder by the TV, and told me that in a few years people would have videotape equipment in their homes. I thought he was dreaming!

I think Headquarters was my favorite album.

I think Davey was the cutest
Peter the sweetest, Mickey the best singer
and Mike probably the best muscian.

Peter was my first celebrity crush, then I moved on to Davey even though he was vertically challenged and I was tall for my age.

57. Monkees Live 1967 was one of the first punk albums ever recorded
...or it would have been, if they had actually released it then, and not 20 years later.

It's not that they intended to make a punk album, it just sounds that way because they're actually playing their own instruments

And before anybody calls me a "hater", I do own the live album in question, along with a couple others. Even though the Monkees weren't really a band, they still made some damn good music for the time. And the Beach Boys were almost as bad live anyway.

60. 'You Just May Be The One', 'Zor and Zam', there is nothing illegitimate:
"Headquarters", "Head", and "Pisces..." are my fav 3 albums, though Nesmith's "Mary Mary" song is still timeless. "For Pete's Sake" is an anthem that should be just as justified as anything made by Jefferson Airplane, IMHO. "Zor and Zam" is a great anti-war ditty as well; though fictitious in that the leaders created a war that nobody came to fight. :-(

LOTS of GREAT songs out there but starting w/ "Headquarters" where they did EVERYTHING on their own to prove they were creative people, not just corporate shills is where their best came from. For this alone they should be treated as a real band. Different beginnings but they fought for what was right and proved themselves worthy. THAT is what counts. (a pity the 4 members seem to act like they regret being involved...)

Of course, today's manufactured images take it up the tailpipe like perfectly programmed robots. Nor is anybody outraged that manufactured images are being put into our "culture". It's like bizarroworld became realworld. :-(
