37. hell YES!!!!
and had the pleasure of seeing Nevermore a few times, too (though I'm not really digging their newer stuff)

It was great to finally see Warrell belting out songs like "Long Since Dark" "Battle Angels" and "Sanctuary" even if it was with a different band...

sadly, though, you are right, only 2 Sanctuary albums :evilfrown:

73. Ahhh Haa..
I've been trying to think of the name of his new band all day. I saw them on Uranium a couple of times. I don't have my Sanctuary cassettes any more but, from what I can remember, Nevermore seem quite a bit heavier and not as fast. My personal favorite Sanctuary song is "Communion". I damn near wore the tape out on that song alone.

2. Hmmm
Best metal Band: Iron Maiden, followed by 80's Metallica

Best Album: The Number of the beast by Maiden, although I keep coming back to Chaos AD by Sepultura.

Favourite sub-genre: I like just about all of it exept the satanic Cradle of Filth shite.

Overlooked classic album: Into the Pandemonium by Celtic frost.

Best overall bands: Maiden, Metallica, Sepultura, System of a Down, Korn, Killing Joke, I'd nomonate Deep Purple too.

Anyway, the stuff I'm listening to at present is more along the lines of Muse & Asian Dub Foundation.

I think I'd have to agree with you on Maiden as Best Metal Band, Metallica and Priest up there too

Reign In Blood shreds it, but I'd have to say Peace Sells by Megadeth is my personal fave metal album

Thrash/Speed is my fave sub-genre

Overlooked Classic Metal Album: Years of Decay by Overkill or Practice What You Preach by Testament

Fave bands overall - you nailed a lot of them, Maiden, Priest, Slayer, Sabbath, Megadeth

Why do I have a feeling someone big has been overlooked

30. Well cool
Two other DUers talking Overkill, I've never seen 'em mentioned here either. They had it all too, besides some great metal, they had that foreboading (sp?) logo, the skull with bat wings, very cool act.

So, how is your hearing loss progressing? (lol)

5. I'm an old head banger
I grew up listening to Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. The first concert I went to was Judas Priest, I forget who was headlining. My favorite metal album now is Megadaeth's "Holy Wars" although I seriously wore out those Metallica albums from the 80s.

Speaking of Metallica, what the hell happened to those guys? They seriously changed their sound back in the early 90s I guess to get some more air time and sell more albums and it's all been downhill from there.

Ratt

I know you don't really know me
I know you don't really care to see me
I'm into total affection
Not being scared if you never please me
You know you really want to lay it down

Right now...

And how....

I know you really want to lay it down
Right now...

Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down

Under the sheets you will find me
I know that nothing's for free
You take what's good for your pleasing
I'll take what's good for this crazy evening
You know you really want to lay it down

Right now......
.....And how.....
....I know you really want to lay it down...

Right now....

Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down

I know you only want romance
I'll give you all that I can
If you'll give me just one chance
To prove myself and my love

Lay it down
Lay it down
Lay it down

Date With Poverty (6:38)
K. Vanderhoof / M. Howe

I live my life the best I can, sometimes I need a change
Losing all my marbles wasn't part of the game
Existing day by day tormented by the telephone
It's hard enough to live my life, why don't you live your own?

I pay out money with a check, I never use the cash
Collectors closing in on me, is this some kind of test?
Borrow is my middle name, the banks give graciously
With interest rates that terrify, they knock you senselessly

Bounce a check, lie a bit, do without
I'm in hiding, just leave me be
This is the first step to my date with poverty

You sit there in your cushy job and call me on the phone
You want my money and everything I own
I'll pay you soon as I get paid, the check is in the mail
Don't call my home anymore, I've long since jumped bail

Bounce a check, lie a bit, do without
I'm in hiding, just leave me be
This is the first step to my date with poverty
I'm in hiding, just leave me be
This is the first step to my date with poverty

Living on a shoestring daily, maybe I'll make some money maybe
I hope to make a living someday, then I'll pay you what I owe you
Then you'll get off my back!

Someday I'll get ahead of things and life will be so grand
I'll buy a house down my the beach, stick my feet in the sand
For now I'll do what I can do to keep this dream alive
Until I win the lottery I must survive

Bounce a check, lie a bit, do without
I'm in hiding, just leave me be
This is the first step to my date with poverty
I'm in hiding, just leave me be
This is the first step to my date with poverty

I'm so fuckin' broke
I can't even afford to pay attention
Don't you know who I am?
You got any food?
I need a drink
Aw, fuck you

In Mourning (9:31)
C. Wells / K. Vanderhoof / J. Marshall / M. Howe

Maybe if you'd listen then you'd know what I just said
If you think the words I'm singing are why your kids are dead
Maybe could it be that no one was there to hear
Did you pay attention to their angers and their fears?
You're trying to find someone to blame who can't be put on trial
The enemy you're looking for is laughing all the while

I mourn for those who have been so deceived
You know the last words that they spoke were "Who loves me?"

People in glass houses should not be throwing stones
A sticker on a record won't give your kids a home
So sad it takes someone to die for you to start to care
Your neglect and misguidance have become your nightmare
I hope and pray this tragedy was not all just in vain
Now you can help somebody else avoid the endless pain

I mourn for those who have been so deceived
You know the last words that they spoke were "Who loves me?"
I hope that someday you will stop and realize why so many kids have died

Think twice before you point a finger that you may regret
To clear your conscience is your goal, but that is all you'll get
What's done is done, you can't bring them back, just let go of despair
You keep saying to yourself "If only I'd been there"

I mourn for those who have been so deceived
You know the last words that they spoke were "Who loves me?"
I hope that someday you will stop and realize
Just ask yourself why so many kids have died?

Love'em. Best album ever - Aenima. First half of that album is the 2nd best music to fuck to (after NIN's "Downward Spiral").

I'm also way into Sepultura - "Choas A.D." has been in the cd player in my car the last couple of weeks.

Love the oldies too though - Judas Priest, Slayer, Anthrax. One of my boyfriends back in college was way into Saxon and I still listen from time to time.

Of the more recent stuff I've been listening to - I dig Disturbed, Rammstein, and Unloco.

Edited on Fri Oct-24-03 02:52 PM by nu_duer
Huge sold out shows, their new album in the top ten in many European nations. I was watching some German language news/entertainment show on PBS last week - i think, and Maiden's single was in the top ten! Very popular around the world.

Of course they just toured some here in the states, many sellout shows here as well. Their album tho, "Dance of Death" debuted here at like number 14 I think (didn't stay on the charts here long, tho - Europe is looking better and better).

Morningrise is my definite favorite. However, I tend to go for the more extreme in metal, so you should get a second opinion! :)

Their first album, Orchid, is also quite good, if a little less polished.

I'm not as familiar with their most recent albums, but it sounds like they've gained some mainstream and critical acceptance lately.

well, most of the metal I listen to is neo-classical, and 99.9% of your average musicians can't even play the stuff

so tell me, since you are obviously new here: Why did you reply to a thread called "metal heads check in here" and post insulting comments? Is that how you introduce yourself in people's homes, too?

country is the same redneck crap re-hashed 1,000 times with the exact same music. Just beer-bellied drunks in mullets crying about their baby dun left them

MOST Americans agree that country is garbage for people who can't play instruments, and are too ugly for pop music.

you obviously know next to nothing about music, and are just bashing for it's own sake

There is alot more to country music then crying about your wife leaving them. Country music is beatiful, and is often singing about having a great time you know "Where I come from" by Alan Jackson. You are the one being childish here not me, I am sorry I am offending your mullet head friends.

64. I know, genius, why don't you define music and noise in precise terms
That way it'll be clear to all of us who find your particular strain of retardation inscrutable as to what, exactly, you mean when you deem one type of sound as noise and the other as music.

Go ahead, I 'll wait.

74. 1,000 miles from nowhere
I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'cause i'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place i want to be

I got heartaches in my pocket
I got echoes in my head
And all that i keep hearing
Are the cruel, cruel things that you said

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'cause i'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place i want to be

Oh, i
Oh, i
Oh, i
Oh, i

Oh, i
Oh, i
Oh, i
Oh, i

I got bruises on my memory
I got tear stains on my hands
And in the mirror there's a vision
Of what used to be a man

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere

Time don't matter to me
'cause i'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place i want to be

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'cause i'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place i want to be

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'cause i'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place i want to be

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'cause i'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place i want to be

I'm a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don't matter to me
'cause i'm a thousand miles from nowhere
And there's no place i want to be

40. A question, if I may
What do you consider "music"?

and one more, since you seem to know, what do "most Americans" consider "music"?

(I'm also tempted to ask if you are in tune to "most Americans" as far as their political beliefs and opinions on the current regime and its policies, but I don't want to stray too far off topic)

43. I don't like Heavy Metal, but who are you to make value judgements
about taste?

Some people prefer to be challenged by the music they listen too. Not everyone thinks calm and soothing a la Kenny G is the way to go.

All music has its good and bad elements. Taste is subjective.

while I don't even come close to liking ALL metal (not by a longshot), your herd-like blanket statements are quite revealing.

while you are doing a good job of racking up post-counts, you'll need to do alot more to appear "legitimate"

48. I said it on your little vanity thread...
and I'll say it again here. I was an actual music major in college. I've spent the majority of my life playing classical music and jazz. I love heavy metal. Some of the most relevant and intense and complex music being made today is heavy metal.

You're entitled to your opinion. But, I'm also entitled to tell you I think you don't know what the hell you're talking about. And on top of that, you don't do a very good job arguing whatever your point is - saying something over and over doesn't make it true.

65. I would disagree
The fact would be that heavy metal is (often) loud - not noise. When you say something is noise, that's an opinion, because noise has a negative connotation. I don't like it when people put down all pop and country as bad music (although it's just their opinion and it can't do a thing to me,) so I can see why metalheads have a problem with what you are saying.

Just like other music, there's good metal and bad metal. Good metal is intense and powerful, and bad metal IMO includes the Linkin Parks and Korns of the world. The Linkin Parks and Korns of the world are making the real noise, IMO - they don't really drive emotions. It's phony with bad playing.

I am no fan of metal, but thought I'd get my two cents in. I like Metallica, Lennon Murphy, and Ozzy Osbourne.

56. How can I pick just one??
Edited on Fri Oct-24-03 05:04 PM by Cleve Steamer
Best Metal Band, Best Metal Album: no way I can choose just one. If I had to choose one album . . . maybe At the Gates, Terminal Spirit Disease . . . or Samael, Blood Ritual . . . or Dissection, The Somberlain . . . or Gorgoroth, Under the Sign of Hell . . . etc., etc. I have many hundreds of metal CDs and a couple thousand albums in MP3 format, and I'm supposed to pick just one?? :o

Favorite Sub-Genres of Metal: Black Metal (particularly Primitive Black Metal and Folk-Influenced Black Metal) and Death Metal (particularly Swedish Death Metal, including both the classic Sunlight Studios material and the later Gothenburg bands), but any form of extreme metal will do

Favorite Metal Bands: At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Dawn, Dismember, Dissection, Entombed, Gorgoroth, Isengard/Darkthrone, Macabre, Obtained Enslavement, Paradise Lost, Samael, Septic Flesh, Slayer, Ulver . . . but I'm sure I'm forgetting some

57. Here's my list:

Best Metal Band: Very tough call, but I would have to go with Dream Theater over about 20 others.

Best Metal Album: Hmmm, Would have to pick from so many again, but Spock's Beard's "V" and "Beware of Darkness" and Metallica's "Master of Puppets" come to mind. Lots of excellent stuff so it's nearly impossible to name just one.

Favorite Sub-Genre of Metal: Progressive

Overlooked Classic Metal Album: "Fighting For the Earth" by Warrior, about 1985.

Favorite Metal Bands overall: Theatre of Tragedy, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Therion, Tool, Shadow Gallery, Spock's Beard, King Diamond, King Crimson (their newer stuff is very much like an industrial metal thing laced with a lot of ambient music), Ministry, Lacuna Coil, Hammerfall, The Gathering, Moonspell, literally dozens of others.

I just saw DT for the first time a couple of months ago, kicked the ass I had hoped they would kick...

and followed Lacuna up & down the west coast this year (and part of the east, too!), and I'm still in dream-land over that

I love Spock's "beware.." though I haven't heard any of their other CD's...

69. ..."....CALL IT.....HEAVY METAL...NOISE!!" says Sammy Van Hagar....

Head bangers in leather
Sparks fly in the dead of the night
It all comes together
When they shoot out the lights
50,000 wats of power
And it's pushin' overload
The beast is ready to devour
All the metal they can hold
Reachin' overload
Start to explode

It's your one way ticket to midnight
Call it Heavy Metal
Higher than high, feelin' just right
Call it Heavy Metal
Desperation on a red line
Call it Heavy Metal noise

Tight pants and lipstick
She's riding on razor's edge
She holds her own against the boys
Yea, cuts through the crowd just like a wedge
Ohh, can you feel the static
So many contacts being made
We've got up front fanatics
Tearing down the barricade
To reach the stage
Can you feel the rage

It's your one way ticket to midnight
Call it Heavy Metal
Higher than high, feelin' just right
Call it Heavy Metal
Desperation on a red line
Call it HEAVY METAL...NOISE!!

81. A truly "vulgar display"...
Edited on Sat Oct-25-03 07:17 AM by FlyByNight
Some short lists:

Best Metal Band(s): Metallica, pre-Black album; Slayer; Motorhead; AC/DC, up to, and including Back In Black; Tool; Iron Maiden; Black Sabbath.

Best Album(s): Reign In Blood - Slayer; Vulgar Display... - Pantera; Among The Living - Anthrax; Master Of Puppets - Metallica; October Rust - Type O; No Remorse - Motorhead; Arise - Sepultura; Tool - Aenima.

Fave Sub-Genre: no real favorite. If it sounds good, fast or slow, I like it. I tend to favor punk-ish stuff though and maybe Speed/Thrash.

Overlooked: don't know. Never really thought about what's "overlooked". Practically all metal gets overlooked in some form: in effect, no radio airplay; ignored by MTV or music-based programming, etc.

Fave(s): Slayer; Motorhead; Type O; Black Label Society; Tool; Anthrax; pre-Black Album Metallica; Prong; Megadeth, up to, and including Rust In Peace; COC; Pantera.

82. Black/death/thrash/doom/... devotee here.
Not to mention I'm old as fuck.

Anyway.

Best Metal Band - considering all subgenres? I dunno. Maiden certainly is among the candidates. But let me restrict my attention to my favorites extreme subgenres - so, let BDTSDG stand for "Black or Death or Thrash or Speed or Doom or Grind"...

Best BDTSDG band: Slayer.
Runners up: Darkthrone; Mercyful Fate; Suffocation; Carcass; Venom

Best BDTSDG album: Slayer, "Reign in Blood." (Not a big surprise, eh?)
Runners up: Darkthrone, "Transylvanian Hunger", Samael "Ceremony of Opposites," Carcass, "Necroticism", Venom, "Possessed," Suffocation, "Pierced from Within," Cryptopsy, "None so Vile," Disembowelment, "Transcendence into the Peripheral."

Overlooked Classic BDTSDG album: Venom, "At War with Satan"
Other underrecognized brilliance: Belmez, "Berserker", Autopsy, "Acts of the Unspeakable," Dodheimsgard, "Kronet til Konge".

Probably more - but I just realized I'm running late and need to skip on out of here.
