Help! Need help translating British-English description of what clothes
to bring on a trip to Rome! My friend got this response from the person she is going to stay with and she and I can only make out that "cardy" is presumably a cardigan and "trews" would probably be some kind of pants. I'll underline the clothing words. If you can make out what all this means, we'd really appreciate your help!

Here's the "coded" message:

> Just bring cotton tops and trews, trainers and something nice for any evenings out we may organise. Plus a cardy or K-way as it can rain in May. Most of the time I wish it would, given my fight to keep this place green.

Trainers

A British slang word for Shoes.

trews

Scottish travelling pants

Cardy

Google says K-Way is a coat with a hood

3. trainers = sneakers or running shoes
you're correct on trews - trousers or pants. Cardy is sweater (cardigan).
No clue on K-way

4. Are you sure that this was written by a Brit?
Trews are some of the oddest clothes available, they are for chaps who wish to wear tartan but are too wimpish to go for a kilt.

Clearly the correspondent means something else.

I have not the foggiest idea what a K-way is, and I have lived my entire life here in Merry England.

5. Like I said. Google will tell you what a K-way is.

It's an Italian brand it seems. Never heard of it, but I know nothing about clothing brand names.

8. My point was that the use of Trews and K-way
Is not very typical of we British, and was not a commentary on the terms themselves.

10. Wish we had had them. We froze in the winter, because we had to wear
those skirts and bare our legs on even the very coldest, windiest days. It was the abolute rule. Boys, of course, wore pants and could add insulating underwear in cold weather. Yes, I have NO fond memories whatsoever of my years in Catholic school. An awful realization, but true. Many awful memories but no good ones. They DID teach me to spell well, but that's about it.

6. cardy is a cardigan, and jumper is a pull over sweater.......
just bring some layers and an anorak or umbrella and you'll be fine.
leave the trews at home.

7. This is awesome - thank you all for your replies!
I think the friend in Rome is a Brit, but I could be wrong. I'll have to ask. The trews are really over the top. I had only heard the word before in discussions of centuries-old mens' clothing. Who knew?
