I have trouble with the words "affect" and "effect"
pointers anyone?

1. I used to, too
This helped me remember which is which:
-"effect" is the result of being "affected"
Does that work?

I never know which spelling to use, so I tend to use words like impact/caused/led to or anything else that might sound okay, just so I can avoid the effect embarrassment of wrongly using affect

:P

the word "affect" is also used as a noun in the cognitive sciences.

so, in that case, affect = emotion

"The decision affects me." (verb)

"The effect of my posting on DU at work was that I lost my job." (noun)

20. affect is the verb, an action
both start with a's (Affect = Action)

example = low gas affected how the car drove

effect is a noun, the explanation of why something happened, both start with e's (Effect = Explanation)

example = she hit her sister, a bruise was the effect
