The Virgin Mary tree stump

Tree stump said to have the form of the Virgin Mary in Passaic, New Jersey, October 24, 2003. Believers are flocking to a rundown street in Passaic to see this tree stump they say is a divine sign of hope for the impoverished neighborhood, October 24, 2003. The piece of wood, whose shape believers say resembles a veiled Virgin Mary with a bowed head, was noticed by passers-by over the weekend on state-owned land alongside a street that residents say is a hangout for illegal drug users. 1. I don't see anything that resembles a virgin Mary
it looks like a tree stump to me.

It kinds of resembles the Virgin of Guadalupe in shape.

7. I see
the generic shape of the madonna. What surprises me about this ad hoc shrine is that folks have draped crucifixes around the stump. Imagine a woman whose son was murdered wearing a replica of the weapon that killed him as jewelry. I've never understood this Mary stuff.

An on-line acquaintance writes a series of satirical short stories called "The Gaps" (as in, "God is in the"). He has a great line about Mary, while Jesus & God argued in the family living room, sitting in the corner practicing her tortilla face. When I find the link to the series I'll post it.

8. Just another example
of people finding recognizable form in random objects.

Happens every day. "What does that cloud look like to you?"

Nothing miraculous in pattern recognition.
