Need help finding a soldier to give a hat to
I'm sure I could find someone local if I tried, but I got to thinking that it would be better for a DU'er to get it. I've got some nice wool in desert camo and black colors, and I would like to make a helmet hat out of it for a soldier who needs it. He or she cannot be allergic to wool (this is top-quality stuff, and it's not scratchy--that said, real allergies exist, and I don't want anyone to get sick from something I make). It should be okay, color-wise. I also have black, but that's in an acrylic/wool blend that's not as soft or nice.

Is there any soldier here on DU who needs one? How do I get it to you? It'll take me awhile to make it (a few other things in the queue), but it'll be ready to get to Iraq or Afghanistan by fall and the colder weather.

Either post here or PM me. Thanks!!!

Hey, should we start a "knit for the DU troops" thing here?

7. kick!
I wish I knew a DU'er who needed it. Maybe if we recommend this thread, more people will stop and take a look at it (like I need a reason to recommend a thread anyway).

8. Thank you!
I know. We have many vets, but I don't know of anyone who is actually serving right now. Hmmm. Maybe that's where we could start--with the vets. How can we get their attention?

12. Just did it!
I hope he can think of someone.

It's not like I couldn't send it through another charity, it's just that I would like to let a Dem know that he or she is loved. I'm sure that they have days when they need to know that.

14. No--I just get really mad that they send them without enough.
They keep our ships at fifty degrees--and everything's metal! They don't bother to give them enough to keep warm or enough sunscreen or enough anything--and yet Halliburton can lose billions of our money without so much as an investigation.

They treat them like crap, don't care if they get hurt or killed, and then they treat them like crap when they get home. Let me tell ya, it pisses me off! When my yarn shop opens up this fall, we're going to do prayer shawls and laprobes and afghans for the VA in Battle Creek for the worst off of the vets. Someone needs to. I'm looking into good patterns now.

I know someone who writes about people like you. It might be some extra publicity to help you out.

16. Nah, I don't do anything most knitters don't.
I have a good friend who literally crochets and knits hundreds of item every year for charity, from stuff for babies of teen moms to caps and mittens for homeless students at a local elementary to tons of stuff for Afghans for Afghans. She'd be the one to do a story on, honestly.

I just don't do enough, and I'm feeling guilty about it. We all need to do more to help our people in harm's way. Like they say at Stitchin' Sedition's site, we all need to be on a war footing, knitting and crochet-wise, just like the crafters during the world wars, not only for our troops but for our poor as well.

22. Sure.
I think she'd be fine with me giving out her address. She is one really cool lady--foster mom for I forget how many kids, adopted the last one and is now practically raising the grandkids, knits and crochets more charity stuff than anyone else I know (which is saying a lot), sews up American Girl doll clothes to give whole sets away to little girls who don't have much, and on and on.

I'll have to find it, but when I do, I'll PM you.

It might give her a voice. The woman who is interested is out of LA (she wanted to interview me about a few things but I didn't feel comfortable about doing it).

All I know was what I was told. All that metal and being that cold just gives my mama's heart the shivers.

18. Helmet hat?
Do you mean a liner, or something they can wear when they aren't in combat?

20. It's like a liner, but it can be worn by itself, too.
It's a bit hard to explain, but it's shaped like the helmet so it'll fit underneath without showing. It's not really thin, so it's more than a liner, and it could be worn on it's own, I suppose. It's shorter in front and then longer in the back, framing the face.

I sent one to a friend's husband stationed in Afghanistan, and he said it was nice to wear under his helmet when he was on guard duty. I was really suprised he even e-mailed me about it, he was so busy over there, but I was glad it was something useful and good.

It's really cold there, from what he said, so wool yarn makes more sense to me. That, and wool will soak up the sweat better. I wouldn't want anyone to be allergic to it, though.

Maybe he'll know someone who'll want a hat or have some ideas. Man, Tikrit?! That's a scary place.
