Oh my God.

You know that feeling you get when it feels like icy cold fingers are gripping your heart and it can't beat just right? That's how that felt.

Shit and hellfire.

9. They are taking it to "it's" logical conclusion, I'm afraid..
Fundie Fristians think you can't be a Democrat and a Christian, so they are doing "God's" work in cleaning up their church.

Pretty soon it's going to happen in more and more churches across the US; the 64,000 question to me is when all those Democratic/Liberal Christians are asked to make a choice of their Church or their Ideals, which will they choose?

13. Thank you so much...That is one of the most stunning and frightening
things I have ever seen. I haven't been to church in over a year, but I like to consider myself a liberal Christian. This really makes me reconsider my beliefs. I have no desire to be associated with trash like this in any way.

kick any members out for political affiliation. Ever.

That's where I've finally found a safe home. Thank goodness.

16. I'm Episcopalian: ie "Whiskeypalian, Frozen Chosen, Episcop-Ba'alians"
"God's Frozen People, Catholic-lite" etc. We're Christian, but we really don't press the issue very much. We're not pushy and practice our faith privately. Just a cultural thing, I guess.

17. ...
My parents and grandparents and great-grandparents always believed faith was an intensely personal and private issue.

I was taught to never ask someone about their religious beliefs and never bring up mine unless directly asked. Anything else was considered rude as hell in my family.

I don't know what the heck happened to THAT.

20. Thats how it should be....
This sickening perversion of bragging about one's religiosity is disgusting. The idea of state legislators using their "faith" to legislate trash like banning gay authors in Alabama or censoring cheerleaders in Texas is just un-American. How dare they use the sacred to justify their pathetic political manuverings.

37. Its enough to make me back away, even from my very liberal church...
My (Episcopal)priest is VERY anti-war, and pro-gay but even so I've avoided church for over a year because I'm ashamed to be connected, even tangentially, to freaks like Dobson and Frist.

39. Isn't that sad?
We've been very church shy in the last few years, but when we found this UU church and started going, we were very pleased. TRULY a liberal church. Everyone is welcome. Very anti-war, pro-social justice and we're in the process of becoming a welcoming congregation for the gay community.

The minister (lay minister) speaks passionately against prejudice, hatred, etc.

Getting kicked out of this Southern Baptist church? Which means these Democrats never have to go there again, give them money or listen that pastor preach his nonsense? Sounds like a favor to me.

24. To you.
But to some people, their church is very important to them. They might have been going there since they were kids. Their parents might have gone there. They might have been baptized in that church, married in that church, had their kids and grandkids baptized there, held their grandmother's funeral service there.

Their best friends might go there, their babysitters, their neighbors.

I'm not an overly religious person and not very into organized religion (I am a liberal Christian who goes to a UU church--very liberal), but I can understand just how painful and devastating this can be to these people.

It's heartless and that minister TOTALLY violated the teachings of Jesus when he did that. He ought to be sorely ashamed of himself.

AND he put their tax-exempt status in jeopardy, because they are acting as a political organization.

It's sick, really.

and I'm sympathetic. Even if leaving is the sensible decision, it should be their choice. I was just being a smartass. It's too bad that those people are in a situation where they are forced out of a community that might be very central to their lives. But an act like that doesn't come out of nowhere. What other intolerant shit comes out of that pastor's mouth each and every week? I'll bet these people haven't felt all that welcome or at home for awhile. Maybe they'd feel more at home in a different church like yours. Maybe this will even backfire on this pastor and the community will choose their Democratic friends and neighbors over him if their bonds are as tight as you suggest.

35. Oh I'm pretty sure they probably haven't felt welcome in a while.
But the minister is apparently in his 30s and I bet they just have been tolerating the bullshit while staying for their family and friends.

The minister is a big league asshole.

Maybe it was a traditional family church or something. Just stop going to these places people! The Southern Baptist Convention is a cult! That's why Jimmy Carter quit, you should too.

I'd have been out of my own volition. Had I even been attracted to that church in the first place, the preacher's pre-election remarks would have sent me running for the door.
