OK, I watched the press conf. -- and, again, the "Bride" didn't show --

I know. I know. Nobody cares. But Jennifer Wilbanks's family Baptist minister read her statement because, according to him, she has issues, and couldn't do it. She's very contrite; she's started therapy. She just wants to be "Mrs. John Mason" -- that is her goal.

In response to a question, it was said that she met her lawyer working together with her in the Junior League. And the lawyer is a member and deacon in yet another Baptist church in town (the spokesman is her family's Baptist minister; she and John Mason go to his family's Baptist church).

This begins to interest me a little as a sociological, feminist issue. Does she just not want any of this, but she's been told all of her life it's exactly what she wants? To be married to this man from a prominent family in town, go to church, be like everybody else, etc.? And if she, in her heart, doesn't want this, then she tells herself she must be crazy -- needs therapy in order to convince herself she wants to be Mrs. John Mason?

ON EDIT: A replayed quote from the statement -- running away had nothing today with "cold feet," was "running away from myself, and from certain fears controlling my life."

1. If her goal was to be Mrs. John Mason,

then she shouldn't have bought that bus ticket. It's that easy.

3. She's been brainwashed
and is part of a cult - I gotta give her credit for trying break free, unfortunately she couldn't do it. She's now destined for a life of Stepford wife hell.

4. Clearly she has issues with big group events.
So do I. I avoid them. Good grief, I about flipped when I heard she was having 600 people at her wedding. I don't even know 600 people...

And I think she is also extremely selfish.
By the time I was her age, I had two kids fer cryin' out loud. She acted like a spoiled 14 year old. I hope he runs hard and fast from her.

13. I think the possibility of criminal charges...
as much as anything, propelled the message/press conference, and the expression of contrition.

11. That goddamn baptist huckster sure loves the camera, doesn't he?
But I guess if you presume to speak for god, it's no problem speaking for a couple of suburban twits.

14. I smell a brainwashing going on (I posted this a couple of days ago)
Edited on Thu May-05-05 04:17 PM by underpants
I can't find that incredibly well thought out and literate thread now.

I just got the sense that something isn't right here. The fiancee was very quick in saying he would take her back (It could be LOVE) but the actions and words of everyone involved especially Dr.Smiley ( his actual name) have the scent of brainwashing (get her back inside the social compound) to me.

I'm just saying.

15. Interesting! I've been away a while, and missed that thread --
Having this all turn out with her "coming to her senses," with the aid of church and prayers, sparing further embarrassment to both families, etc., would serve a lot of interests.

16. "She has issues and needs counselling" What kind?
"Oh nothing really she just has some things she needs to work out"

Really what kind?

"Oh she is fine trust me she needs....

That is the general line from Dr.Smiley and everyone else (not direct quotes). They are being very vague and that could be for privacies sake and I am sure they are embarassed now but it just strikes me as this pastor is in complete control of everyone right now. Just my sense, a feeling.
