Mac users..avoid QuickTime 7 like The Plague!
Edited on Wed May-04-05 08:21 PM by zulchzulu
Why the f_ck Apple puts out a product like QuickTime 7 that toally hoses one of my Macs.....

First of all, if you have 10.3.9 and get the chance to update to QuickTime 7, run as fast as you can to cancel that shit as quickly as possible.

First off, your QuickTime 6 license is worthless. You have to buy QuickTime 7 for $30. Then (if you're like me), all your QuickTime, your ProTools rig, iTunes and other apps are screwed and NON-OPERATIONAL.

Then you can sorta de-install QT 7 with QT 6.5.2. Then, you can watch QuickTime TRY to open your QuickTime-based apps and time out AFTER A COUPLE WEEKS.

Shame on Apple for putting out such an untested MAJOR PART of their OS. WTF!

Time to reformat...

3. The problem is incompatibility with Digidesign CoreAudio
I'm running Pro Tools LE 6.4 with Mac OS 10.3.9 and all was fine prior to upgrading to QT7. Then had all the trouble you describe. Found a good discussion on the Apple support boards where someone suggested updating my Digidesign CoreAudio driver. I had been using 6.4.1, which is what came with my last PT upgrade. I downloaded CoreAudio version 6.5.2 from Digi's site, installed it, and everything now works fine. This does nothing for my lost QT Pro license (#$@!), but at least I have my Pro Tools, iTunes, and QT Player back. Your mileage may vary, but give it a try.

Here's that Apple discussion:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@23.wtxXawE1RaP.1@.68addf52

And here are some Digi CoreAudio download links:
(6.5.2) http://akdownload.digidesign.com/support/digi/mac/osx/coreaudio652.bin
(6.7) http://akdownload.digidesign.com/support/digi/mac/osx/coreaudio67.bin
(6.9) http://akdownload.digidesign.com/support/digi/mac/osx/coreaudio69.bin

Good luck,
bpcmxr

6. Glad I could help!
The problem was driving me mad, too.

BTW, if PT functionality is very important to you, I wouldn't go near Tiger for a couple of months. Not until Digi releases a Tiger-compatible PT update, and then not until the bugs have been ironed out. If things are working for you now in Panther, stay awhile.

For up-to-the-minute discussions of all things PT, frequent the Digidesign User Conference:

12. Digi Claims "8 to 10 Weeks" away from Tiger patch
Just an FYI to original poster:

Posted 5-4 on the DUC

<snip>

The initial release of Pro Tools LE 6.9 will not work with the new Mac OS X version 10.4 "Tiger" operating system.

* A free compatibility update for Pro Tools LE 6.9 for Mac OS X 10.4 is expected to be available within 8 to 10 weeks of the 10.4 "Tiger" release.

<snip>

sounds like a CYA timeframe -- I would expect something before then.

5. Envious of the Pro Tools peeps
I want. I want. Ah, well, I just shelled out hundreds of dollars on Reaktor 4, so I'll content myself with my new toy.

8. another interesting way to get into ProTools LE now - M-Audio version
Avid who owns digi bought M-Audio, so they have a version of ProTools LE that runs on some of the M-Audio interfaces:

Pro-Tools M-Powered:

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.howto&ID=9562a9db7b674501eb19637c748b3bd8

I have seen the software for around 250.00. Cheapest card I've seen that works with is Audiophile 24/96 @ around 100.00.

digi has info too at digidesign.com and a demo download. . .sorry I can't figure out how to give you a link. Just hit their site, choose products, and LE and you'll find it.

17. Log into your apple store account...
Revert to the previous version of QuickTime. Log onto Apple Store Account and you can get your license there under software downloads/purchases. It keeps track of online purchases and license codes.

19. Apple Quicktime 6.x Reinstaller
I was about to go into an involved way of going back to 6.5.2 that involved deleting an update receipt and a package and stuff, but fortunately, Apple has a utility to do this available from their downloads section of their website.

11. Have you ever used Carbon Copy Cloner to back up your drive before an upda
te? It is great!!!! for times like these. I too had audiocard and QT troubles and it was no muss no fuss to restore my old configuration.

It is donate ware -- you basically clone your whole drive to another one.

Then when you get a gotcha like this (digidesign's sluggish updates to their software) then you just boot from the clone and clone it back to your internal drive!

Given that you can get a 120 gig drive at the Worst Buy for 50.00, and an external firewire case for around 30.00 online it can save you a lot of aggravation.

I just went thru a whole trouble shooting trauma based on my DAW and it was great.

Carbon Copy Cloner:

(Only problem is it isnt Tiger ready yet -- OK though for panther, and Tiger ready soon)

14. No problems yet
I have been using it in conjunction with their Pro video tools, with no problems. Paying $30.00 for the pro version is something I don't complain about anymore, been doing it with every major release anyway, no big deal.

16. My QT 5 key worked though QT 6, and I sure got my money's worth out of it!
Given the amt of new features in 7, I'm not complaining. I am sure it is going to work out to be one of the better 30.00 I spend this year.
