Favorite "Pre-Punk" bands...Name Yours!
Thought I'd see which band or bands people view as pre-punk, and who your favorites might be.
I thought that I'd let some others deal with the what most people would consider to be the "Big Three", (hint: one is from NYC, another from Detroit, the other from Ann Arbor/Detroit).

I recently got a GREAT lp by a UK band called Third World War, from 1971. They have a rough, raw sound and a singer that sounds like a cross between Joe Strummer and Lemmy. VERY politcal band, they seem to have been regarded as a kind of UK MC5.
Here's an excellent article I found regarding the lp:

3. You Beat Me To It - I Got The AM Radio ON!
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive past the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on

I'm in love with Massachusetts
And the neon when it's cold outside
And the highway when it's late at night
Got the radio on
I'm like the roadrunner

Alright
I'm in love with modern moonlight
128 when it's dark outside
I'm in love with Massachusetts
I'm in love with the radio on
It helps me from being alone late at night
It helps me from being lonely late at night
I don't feel so bad now in the car
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the roadrunner
That's right

Said welcome to the spirit of 1956
Patient in the bushes next to '57
The highway is your girlfriend as you go by quick
Suburban trees, suburban speed
And it smells like heaven(thunder)
And I say roadrunner once
Roadrunner twice
I'm in love with rock & roll and I'll be out all night
Roadrunner
That's right

Well now
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive to the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on at night
And me in love with modern moonlight
Me in love with modern rock & roll
Modern girls and modern rock & roll
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the roadrunner
O.K., now you sing Modern Lovers

(Radio On!)
I got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the car, got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the AM sound, got the
(Radio On!)
Got the rockin' modern neon sound
(Radio On!)
I got the car from Massachusetts, got the
(Radio On!)
I got the power of Massachusetts when it's late at night
(Radio On!)
I got the modern sounds of modern Massachusetts
(Radio On!)
I've got the world, got the turnpike, got the
(Radio On!)
I've got the, got the power of the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the, late at night, (?), rock & roll late at night
(Radio On!)
The factories and the auto signs got the power of modern sounds
(Radio On!)
Alright

Right, bye bye!

5. I suppose that "The Dolls" must be included.
Assuming that they're not one of the Big 3. I'm guessing you mean VU when you say 'from NYC'.

The Stranglers are also pre-punk, although they often get lumped in with Punk music.

Just about anyone on the Nuggets releases qualifies, I guess.

22. No pain, no gain!
Loves me some Lyres. But ain't nothin' compares to DMZ.

And I'm 30, so yeah... never seen 'em. ;) But the Bomp! compilation of their early recordings is essential for anyone who loves rock & roll.

that The Who with "My Generation" was the first punk band. Doesn't necessarily sound punk but the lyrics certainly reflect the spirit.....don't they?

12. I kind of agree.
They were the first punk band that styled their music to the mass market. John Lennon was a punk in the truest sense of the word, in his early years. Cross him, pick your ass up out the gutter. Later years, only when he was drunk. Strange that he made his money in pop.

No, really.

Most punk left me cold, but I love the spirit, and that's been around since the High Numbers.
