Before you answer that Sauron was only an eye, remember that he pretty well single-handedly destroyed Middle Earth prior to becoming an eye.

Isildur was able to cut the ring finger off of Sauron -- which should've defeated him for good, by the way -- and Vader never would even come close to getting hit by someone like Isildur.
