What do you think of the following singers/ musicians/ bands?
Do me the favor of responding to each name below with your reaction as expressed in percentages in the subject line, eg Like (or Plus, or Good, or something positive) 60%; Dislike (Minus, Bad, something negative) 40%. I'm probably going to get banned for crossing the spamming filter for making multiple posts in a very short period, so feel free to add more musical artists by responding to this here original post with their names in the subject lines. Ok? Go!

With so much work, he's got a lot of stuff that doesn't do a lot for me, but his good stuff is so good it helps to make up for some of the filler. I definitely understand why some people become obsessed fans of this guy.

Harvest is one of the all time perfect albums. Live Rust is brilliant.

However, he's capable of being just truely terrible. I've got a copy of American Stars And Bars that I still can't figure out why I don't throw it on the fire rather than actually pay for firewood. I guess it just wouldn't even burn that well...

That said, when the man's good, he's REALLY good.

U2 is the greatest rock band still playing today, and has the social conscience to show for it, Even when they were "selling out", it was to satire those who sell out. They put on the BEST concerts, And Bono sweat on me once. Wembley Stadium, summer 1986. Not to mention, he gave a kick-ass commencement address at Penn last year. Their B-sides are better than most people's albums. They rock and they inspire.

206. Thank you!!!!
I walked into a record store and this great Kate Bush song on the store sound system. I went up to the owner of the store (who I knew) and asked when the new Kate Bush album had come out.

He held up the case for the first TA album to show what was actually playing and said something like "so you hear it too?".

To this day, I'm still trying to figure out how Tori Amos became such hot shit while Kate Bush remains a cult artist (not counting that Kate's gone about 13 years since her last album).

Her old stuff is fucking incredible. Nothing can make me cry like "Me and a Gun".

But she's strange. As she grows and changes so too does her music. She lost a lot of fans with Boys For Pele, which I thought was brilliant but many people thought it was too surreal. I was disappointed with To Venus and Back until I realized that she'd changed again and realized just how damn good it was. I've been listening to The Beekeeper. A lot of it leaves me cold but Sweet The Sting is so good that I'm pretty sure it's me not her. We'll see. And even if I end up hating this album, I'll still be looking for her next one. But I doubt I'll hate it, she changes and has the power to make you change too.

Khash.

LynneSin and I stood for hours in the cold Austin night a few weeks ago to see Mr. Idol perform live at South by Southwest, and he did not disappoint. I must say, he looks great, he sounds great, he rocks, but his new material seems a bit uninspired. Still, Billy is an icon of a youth spent punk rocking, and I love him.

I love all the NIN albums that I have. Haven't heard the new one, though, and I never bought "The Fragile", so I can't speak for those...guess you could say I like the early-mid 90's stuff best.

Saw them live about 10 years ago...great show. Trent is quite the hot genius.

NIN can really rock, and I love any band that would collaborate with Bowie (and that Bowie would deign to collaborate with) but they need to branch out a bit, their overall sound is a bit tired.

Pretty Hate machine is a classic, Downward Spiral is a masterpiece, and The Fragile was decent (would've made a strong single disc album if all the B-Sides that were included were kept in their place), but as for the new album... what I've heard so far sounds a bit crappy.

I was a little taken back by Trent's switch to almost speed metal after Pretty Hate Machine, but it grew on me and since I love metal I ended up loving the blend of industrial techno with metal.

I give him a 90

159. 10% - were good for 10 seconds in the mid 90s
These guys were one of my pet bands in the mid 90s after the release of the EP "Enjoy Incubus". Saw them at the Troubadour in LA in 97 and at a free show in front of the student union at Long Beach State a little later where they attracted about 50 people and managed to play about 2 1/2 songs before the electrical circuit they were plugged into blew out. "Science" was a decent record, but then they sold out by changing their style to cater to the 14 year old girl mentality and the KROQ crowd and (surprise) that's when they simultaneously became famous and started to suck - which they've done ever since.

I think he was on speed. He was absorbed. I was drinking beer and after a while he started winning. It was one of those dopey two-person table things they had back in the 70s, at a club called Shaboos near UConn. He was a mess. His band was sorta lurking around wondering if he would be able to go onstage. He did, and the show was brilliant.

RIP, Jeff.

264. Well, I disagree
I'll take him over Segovia, Page, DiMeola.. you name it. Hendrix is up there with Django, Christian, and de Lucia, and for sheer inventiveness he tops them all.

Technique is not everything... and I have a masters in classical guitar and have been playing for decades... neither is "diversity." Sometimes limiting oneself to one style brings a greater gain in the long run, like specialising in 16th C vihuela diferencias or early 20th C forró 'pé-de-serra' do nordeste do Brasil, como Luiz Gonzaga. :)

I say blue is my favorite color - you are free to disagree according to your own personal tastes.

303. yes...they are.
mike mccready live solos for: even flow, animal, alive, yellow ledbetter, nothing as it seems, etc....
better than hendrix

jimmy page....well....do i even need to mention.....he completely blows hendrix out of the water....

hendrix died early...and he was black...those are the only two reasons we're still having this conversation....

229. Had he lived to 68, he'd have changed the course of rock.
I can't imagine that he would not have had a major influence on the evolution of rock music. Rock musicians as a whole never managed to make sense of rap until around the turn of the millenium. The few who did either were flashes in the pan (Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers), or produced a music that lacked the breadth to evolve to anything other than speed-metal monoculture.

Hendrix could have bridged the old blues-style singing with rap, and he could have put something other than power chords or ripped samples on top. I'm thinking Castles Made of Sand taken to the next level.

One of the local stations I listen to here in Iowa (100.7) does "get the Led out" every night at 9 and I love it when I'm driving during that time-it's like 15-20 minutes of pure rockin' out in my car....I also love listening to them while I sketch...these guys really are the "classic" in rock!

...really not into their stuff on Mute but early singles and 1st 3 lps are great. Also, I was at the gig that "Document & Eyewitness" was recorded at. Talk about a bemused audience...also saw the "2 People in a Room" "Tour". Another head-scratcher.

I'm not sure folks are willing to open a music thread with 200 replies. Wouldn't mind being proven wrong of course. But if you want to start a new one and let this one die, 'zokay by me.
