Has Anyone Here Seen The Movie K19- Widowmaker?
Edited on Tue May-03-05 09:11 PM by cryingshame
I usually loathe military/war movies but sometimes one comes along and is so well acted and compelling, you stay with it.

K-19 is based on a real life story of the first Soviet Nuclear Submarine in the early 60's during the Cold War.

Story is told from Soviet perspective.

The Party wants a working nuclear submarine ASAP and the first one is commissioned even though it's held together with duct tape. Because the crew's Captain complains about the substandard conditions of the sub, he's forced to work under the command of another Captain.

Anyhow, at the climax, the sub is off the American coast with its reactor about to completely melt down. The men want to abandon the sub and allow the American dsetroyer who is circling to rescue them.

The Captain however wants to submerge because the sub might very well explode taking the Americans and everyone else into kingdom come... thus igniting nuclear retaliation between the Soviets & US.

Anyone else see this film? It was on tv the other night.

Stars Liam Neeson & Harrison Ford

2. Yeah, I Think You Refer To Men Exposed To Heavy Duty Radiation
while trying to fix the reactor.

It was nasty... and well acted.

3. Yes, I have the DVD.
Another really good submarine movie is "Das Boot".
It's about life on the German U-Boats during WWII.

4. I've been trying to find it
I saw a preview of it in the beginning of some other movie I rented and it looked good. Been searching for it in video stores for months but haven't been able to find it.

Been looking for Das Boot too, but can't find that one either.

5. Excellent movie -- I have the DVD
The acting is awesome -- with Harrison Ford & Liam Neeson in unexpected roles.

The background to the making of the movie -- finding the sub and then modifying it to look like the class of sub -- is worth watching.

The film gave me another view of the cold war -- and the fact that this crew was so heroic. It also makes me wonder who the real enemies were during the cold war (the lying Politicians -- perhaps??).

As a general rule I don't like all male films -- however the director was female (I only learned this after watching the movie and watching the extra DVD features.)

Oh -- try Costco -- that's where I found this DVD.

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" -- is another really great movie. <major grin>

7. I Also Only Learned The Director Was Female After Seeing Film
and reading up about it.

National Geographic has a whole section devoted to this on their webpage.

6. Another good one, similar to K-19...
...is Hostile Waters. I believe it was made by HBO, but should be available on DVD.

Based on a true incident during the Reagan Regime when a U.S. and a Soviet sub collided off the East Coast.

A fire broke out on the Russian sub, and the only way the commander could put it out was by surfacing and opening the missile silo doors.

Of course, this makes the U.S. sub commander (Martin Sheen) think he's about to launch his missiles. So the American prepares to fire on and sink a Russian nuclear sub...

There's some good background with a "White House advisor" showing up and offering totally useless advice.
