Do You Know Anyone Who Talks CONSTANTLY? A Chatterbox?
An old buddy of mine just babbles incessantly. He has so many OTHER redeeming qualities... but the non-stop babble-babble-babble just gets to be too much to take. Who knew that so MANY words could be uttered with just ONE breath?

He's never at a loss for SOMETHING to talk about! Don't answer the phone unless you've got a spare HOUR to spend with him. Don't invite him over to watch a DVD unless you're prepared to NOT watch the DVD.

On the plus side, he's got a normal sized ego, so fortunately the chatter isn't primarily about him. But on the NEGATIVE side... many of his stories (and gossip) are about friends of his (or family members) that I don't know. -- Not only do I not know them, I'll probably never meet them, and unless the story is particularly humorous or extraordinary in some way... I have little interest in hearing it.

Do you know anyone like that? Do you ever just want to SCREAM at them and say "PLEASE, SHUT, UP. MY, TURN."

1. Oh yeah...oh yeah.
There are some people that I love dearly, but for whom I have a low tolerance.

4. I saw a guy at the state fair last year with a shirt on that read
"Help! I'm talking and I can't shut up!"

Maybe your friend needs that for his birthday or Christmas.

8. Very True...
... there appear to be many people who type just to 'hear' themselves talk.

Fortunately, it's very easy for me (unbeknownst to them) to skim over the drivel and pluck out the important bits. When you're actually sitting with someone, it's difficult to skim or fast-forward and get to the END of the story.

12. That's true, of course, between here and being with someone face to face.
Edited on Tue May-03-05 08:23 AM by terrya
Yes, it's easy to pick and choose here. Or just put said person or persons on ignore.

I dated a guy, years ago, who was like that. Randy was a sweet guy...just nice, caring, a good heart. But...he wouldn't SHUT UP. Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk. There were times that he got on my nerves so much I couldn't stand to be around him. That's cruel to say...but I like quiet moments with other people, also.

in real life, Terry. I can go on quite a bit in real life. ;)

Thanks though. Here, I often can't think of anything to say unless it's a feminist rant or music commentary.

Edited on Tue May-03-05 08:13 AM by Jamastiene
all you would have to do is let me know when I am babbling. When I am nervous, I tend to do that, so I have heard the scream you mentioned before. It was a shock the first time I heard it, because no one had ever told me I was a chatterbox except my mother. She tends to be sort of on the grumpy side, so I didn't know she was right. I guess now I know why she was grumpy so often when I was a little kid. I do tend to go on and on until somebody stops me.

10. When I was young
My grandmother had this friend who talked and talked and talked. Looking back I would say she had some medical condition, but as kids we didn't know. She would wear her husband's army boots and she was just out of her mind. She would just show up at the house, and we could hear her talking outside. Then she would come in and go and go an go..lol. She would also say "you got me" you got me?" when she was in between sentences. One time my mother drove her up to the corner as we were leaving my grandmother's and she talked the whole time. Then she got out of the car and just kept on going..lol. We laughed so hard. We never laughed in her face, because we were brought up to respect adults, but it was so hard not to laugh when she was gone.

11. This can be a mental illness
My late godmother had it. She lived on the West Coast and would call us at 3 a.m. because she had no idea what time it was on the East Coast. And she would talk -- endless stream-of-consciousness babble -- and it was impossible to get a word in edgewise. At some point I read something about this form of mental illness, and realized she had it. I pitied her daughter and husband, who suffered from it daily.

Non-stop talking may be a result of mania, anxiety, attention-deficit disorder, or a side effect of medication.

If you can get a word in, you might ask your friend if he's aware of his talking problem, and if he would consider getting professional help for it.

14. I have a friend like that
but here's the thing. This friend of mine is 80% hearing impaired. My brother also talks incessantly and doesn't hear well. When you notice someone like this it's interesting to note that they may well find it easier to talk because then they don't have to try to (and maybe fail to) understand what you are saying.

20. I used to date one.
I liked her a lot, but I had to break up with her because her inability to leave a silence alone eventually drove me half-batshit. She was the type who would read street signs out loud if the conversation ebbed on a long car-trip.

My husband!

And unlike your friend, much of the time the chatter is, in fact, about him.

Watching anything with him is a special kind of exercise in controlling my frustration. :)

26. I've known a few.
When I really think about it I honestly feel bad for these people, but when they are right there doing it it is very difficult to not get super pissed off. These folks can actually ruin my mood for the rest of the day, definately one of my pet peeves. I'm not talking about just people who talk alot though, it's the people who just do the endless babble. I've actually come close to being physically ill from people who won't shut up. On the bright side though when they are babbling you can just picture different ways of stabbing them and as long as you nod and uhhum every couple minutes they are none the wiser.

27. Yes.
I was sitting in the jury holding room the other day waiting (all day) to see if they wanted to call in the extra people. A few chairs over was one of those guys. He never shut up the entire fucking day. Every once in a while I would hear a soft murmur as his neighbor managed to get in half a dozen words. Then he would be off again for the mext twenty minutes or so. I left that day (spared from jury duty) wishing I had been chosen to go to the court room just to get away from him. Oh yeah, he's one of those guys whose voice carries, too. Couldn't get away from his chatter no matter where in the room I sat.

29. I have a brother-in-law like that
He never shuts up. What's more, he considers himself a major know-it-all, but is usually wrong. He is also continually finishing other people's sentences, again he's usually wrong. He does this not only with friends and family, but with complete strangers. Combine all this with a short temper, and one day someone is going to clean his clock but good.

Fortunately, I have learned to live with it. When he gets going I just clam up and watch the show. Sometimes it's rather amusing.
