Nipples (rant about censorship in breast cancer story)
So I'm watching TV in the Miami area during lunch today (I'm on the road) and they did this feature called "Missed on Mammogram!!", about a type of breast cancer that's not detectable on a mammogram. They tried to show what it looked like, but they pixelated the nipple and the area around, so you couldn't really see what they heck they were talking about.

GRRR. Breat cancer is not sexy. Pictures of breasts with rashes, dimpling or other problems are not sexy. I don't understand why they had to pixelate a story shown on the noon news on a weekday. Isn't my safety more important than pixelating medical photos?

I would have liked to have seen it so I'll know what it is. The whole point of the story is we're all aware of lumps but this is unfamiliar. I also look carefully at pictures of melenoma that are on the news sometimes, since I'm pretty damned likely to see it show up eventually on my burned-and-roasted Irish skin.

1. And it is JUST the nipple that's naughty.
Some plastic surgery show I was watching, they had a woman who was having breast reconstruction following a double mastectomy. She had no nipples, just flesh and fat to form a breast. Well, they showed the whole thing. A woman can bare her chest on national TV as long as her nipple has been removed.

Yet we cheer and revel in violence on prime time TV.

WTF is wrong with this country?

4. Then why all the hoo-ha over Janet Jackson?
Wasn't her nipple covered with some kind of weird jewelry?

5. Not totally covered.
It was jewelry, but it was sort of like a little cage.

Yeah, so even the tiniest GLIMPSE of a nipple is enough to cause a panic!

2. More fun from my Automated External Difibrillator training...
all of the heart attack victims were male, furthering the stereotype that women don't have heart attacks, because of course we couldn't dare show a woman's bare chest on the training video. :eyes:

3. That's wierd
One of the local news shows did a special show devoted to breast health, and it included a woman demonstrating a self-exam. They showed everything, because it was a health issue and not an attempt to tittilate. (Sorry, I'll try harder to resist.)

Of course, this was several years ago and before tittygate. Now you can't show any pink bits or naughty language on TV because the FCC woun't tell you in advance if they'll take you to the cleaners. They want the chance to stick thier finger in the wind first.

6. Reminds me of the days when
AOL cancelled quite a few subscribers for using the word 'breast' in a breast cancer forum.

8. Totally OT to GG: Had 9th-row seats behind home plate
Saturday night, unlike my usual seats way way up behind 3rd base

And I got to see exactly 3 innings because it starting pouring.

And the Phils lost.

And Chase wasn't playing.

Not my lucky night.

10. Girlie-bits are always "naughty"

seriously, though....

Our society has "sexed-up" everything, so it's not surprising that a "news" show that would even choose to show a story about breast cancer, would have a "problem" airing it...

How often do you see news bits about testicular cancer too?? (only when someone famous is brave enough to tell about THEIRS)...

Cancer used to be whispered..and still some diseases & ailments that deal with "yukky" stuff are not covered.. they still kill though :(

11. Uh-oh. We might see a NIPPLE!
Hey Patiod,

I agree with you. Wouldn't it be a GOOD thing for those who produced the mammogram story to show a photograph of how that cancer looks so that the women of Miami MIGHT KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR? Sorry for yelling, but sheesh! What is the point of doing the story if one doesn't even know what the danger signs look like?!!?

In the meantime, my family is Swedish and Irish. I stopped roasting my ultra-fair redhead complexion after a blistering lecture from our doctor. At the same time, I know LOTS of people who've had precancerous skin lesions removed, including DH. Maybe those things should be shown on the news, too.

How's it going? When is that husband of yours bringing you to the beautiful Pacific Northwest?

Julie

14. Husband hell - my JOB is more likely to do that then Ralph is
Hoping to persuade clients they need to talk to docs in SEE-attle (Go Huskies)

Have been to San Fran twice in the space of a month, but no luck getting any further north!

Keep that lily-white skin out of the sun. I have stuff (non-symmetric moles) that the doc says has a 50% chance of becoming cancerous. Yay.

15. Ya know
DH is getting ready for another jaunt to San Fran. If you're going to be there, I'll bet he'd buy you a drink ;-). Of course, if you ever make it out here, we'll have to close down the bar!

>I have stuff (non-symmetric moles) that the doc says has a 50% chance of becoming cancerous. Yay.<

This is no good. I hope you're part of the 50% that stays healthy...

Julie

12. It's outrageous
Let's let women die instead of showing a nipple - a part of the body that all humans have - on tv. Information that could potentially save someone's life is blurred for fear of offending sensibilities? That's insane.
