Defend your taste in crappy TV!
I will graciously go first: "The Surreal Life" is fucking genius. A disparate selection of has-beens, many of them in denial of their diminished status, stuck together 24/7 for two weeks and corralled into inane activities? The clashes are an irresistable trainwreck. Plus it was kinda neat to see Peter Brady and Flava Flav (?) gettin' to tap some supermodel tail.

Japanese contestants performing horrendous physical challenges with hilarious dubbing.

9. The high point of MXC: Corporate Mascots vs Movie Monsters
We have that one saved on replay (Tivo clone). Its difficult to watch as we have maxed out our medical insurance and the repeated visits to the emergency room for split sides and hernias is adding up.

12. MXC is one of the best shows on TV, hands down.
18 people stranded on a tropical island is kid's stuff compared to Japanese game shows.

Edited on Mon May-02-05 09:10 AM by tuvor
Back in the mid-90's, it made for a hell of a Saturday afternoon of guilty pleasures.

3. Ah, yes, Acapulco H.E.A.T.!
The Fabio vehicle which was a gender-reversed precursor to V.I.P., which itself was some of the greatest, most face-meltingly weird accidental comedy ever.

I think Ms. Anderson's a lot smarter than people give her credit for.

Hard to say the same for Fabio.

4. I don't know that I watch enough TV to defend any.
My GF drags me in to watch Law and Order on a regular basis. But that is it for my network TV viewing. I will catch some stuff on Cartoon Network but I will defend the Anime I watch over any mainstream broadcast any day.

19. Get yourself a Tivo (or similar device)
You can take over your own scheduling and free yourself from the tyrany of the advertisers schedule.

I had completely given up on TV for a long time. Then we got a Replay (Tivo clone but with perks). Now I can choose what I want to watch when I want to watch it. No longer subject to the tyrany of having to watch whatever happens to be on when I am free.

When you can control what you watch the quality of what is available actually goes up. So often the things of merrit are so buried under the dreck that we never can wade our way through to it. DVR (digital video recorders) allow us some measure of control over the process.

15. Okay, both from MTV: Cribs and Pimp My Ride
First, Cribs. Sure, it's overindulgence. It shows how the rich and famous live, and how I never will. I don't envy them, though. I'd be disgusted with myself if I lived in a multi-million dollar home and had 7 vehicles. I find it to be a guilty pleasure to see that you can be a real knucklehead and make it big time. Not all of them, mind you, but a good number.

Second, Pimp My Ride. I'm amazed what this group can do with a total shitbox. Personally, I think having a half-dozen DVD screens in a car is pretty stupid, but they all seem to get them. I can only hope that along with the $20,000 worth of audio equipment they put in the car, they put $1,000 worth of theft deterrent in there, as well. Cuz, you know that shit is getting stolen.

39. I agree both of those shows are great...
I think my favorite part about cribs is when they go to these peoples houses and you can total tell that they do not live their. I can't remember who's house it was suppose to be but they had this room with a bunch of model boats and they were two rappers that had no clue what any of the boats were. Plus they had all these cars that they had no clue what they were. It was great.

Unfortunately I get suckered into the Real World Road Rules challenges. Something about these people just makes me laugh because they are so retarded. I would love to go on that show and make them cry.

But what I want to know is, do they actually do anything to fix those cars up mechanically, or do they just put fancy rims and DVD players in what is still a piece of crap car?

Because you know we all laugh at the guy broken down on the side of the road with 20-inch rims and a kickin' stereo.

Oh yeah, and my crappy TV-show: Cops. I've seen every episode plenty of times, but it never gets old. I love that show.

21. I love "The Surreal Life"
I also have recently discovered "Heavy Metal Makeover" on Fuse.

Three pierced and tattooed, leather-wearing vixens take a guy and make him over in "the heavy metal lifestyle." I'm not really quite sure what that is, but it seems to involve listening to Judas Priest.

This show proves the maxim "There is nothing that people won't do to appear on television."

30. OMG, I remember that show!
You could always count on two things:

If it was one man with four women, each woman would be totally enamored of the guy until she was eliminated, at which point he bacame the biggest jerk ever and she never liked him anyway.

If it was one woman with four men, the INSANE jockeying for alpha-male status was some of the most hilarious TV ever. Behavioral science students could write theses on that shit.

33. Gastineau Girls
Clearly takes a post-modern approach to the viewing process, while still keeping its cultural relativism in check.

The neo-realistic style is tempered with a touch of nouvelle vague, yet still manages to affirm Lyotard's skepticism toward metanarrative.

ART I tell ya. :P
