Poll question: Real World Music vs Luaka Bop
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 01:34 PM by ChavezSpeakstheTruth
Obviously this is just a veiled Peter Gabriel vs David Byrne poll - but you knew that.

9. well of course that's what i meant to say
:silly:

it's actually a tougher call now that i think about it. geoffrey oryema's "exile" is a real favorite of mine. and there are some great nusrat records.

but luaka bop reissued os mutantes and and awesome shugie otis record...so they win.

3. Go get some Franco.
Zairean guitarist, recorded lotsa stuff between 1972-75. His guitar style reminds me a bit of Sunny Ade, but brighter, almost Jerry Garcia-esque. And of course, the rythyms are awesome.

7. Of course, mang!
And Antibalas, Tony Allen.....etc.

MY fave Fela tune is "Colonial MEntality." Very powerful shit. And Expensive.

14. "Just Like That"
is my Fela pick. I love the unison horn section. Powerful.

I also like that Fela has his female backup dancers dance with their backs (and butts) to the audience. Yes very sexist, but then again, the dude had a harem.

4. Is there a company called Real World Music, or are you suggesting
that Luaka Bop doesn't compile real world music?

12. Well, LB did reissue Tom Ze
but if you're planning on 'gettin it on' you'll want some Real World in the player.

And the production... holy crap! It just *sounds* so good.

Speaking of which, I'm in the market for some new mideastern music. I'm looking for something with a real catchy hook (if you know the first couple of Natasha Atlas records or Amina's "pourqoi" song, that's what I'm after).

Any suggestions appreciated.

15. Have you heard Hakim
an Egyptian singer? Great voice! A little poppier than Natacha and Amina, but
