http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050428/ap_en_bu/spider_man_suit"NEW YORK - Superhero creator Stan Lee is feeling rather super himself after reaching a settlement with Marvel Enterprises. The cartoonist had sued in November 2002 to share profits generated by the company's TV and movie productions — particularly the box-office smash "Spider-Man," which earned more than $800 million worldwide, and its super successful sequel."
I hate the way the headline refers to him as a "cartoonist" considering Lee never once drew a single magazine as he was, at least claimed to be, a writer. Lee's own ability and willingness to co-opt the work of others is highly notorious in comics' history. His feud with Marvel's most creative and prolific artist, the late Jack Kirby, brought to light many allegations that Lee was merely a figurehead at Marvel while Kirby, Steve Ditko, and other creators labored furiously to re-invent the failing company. Lee's background in comics was somewhat dubious at best, according to Kirby and several other insiders, he was given a staff position at Marvel because of family connections. Now, he's likely received several million from Sony over this movie lawsuit, which has been his retirement career for several years now. Lee's sad attempt to branch out from Marvel's legacy with his own company resulted in bankruptcy and several lawsuits from the SEC for stock fraud.
