This is my desktop computer's screen, it's XP with Aston Shell and AltDesk on top. The laptop, which I am using right now, uses plain Win2K Pro; it's a Cassini shot of Saturn, with 40 or so mostly useless icons scattered everywhere.

I like several distros, and no clear favorite stands out. I do have a least favorite though -- Redhat 9 was by far the worst I've ever had the displeasure of using. It scarred my so badly that I can't bring myself to try Fedora.

I've used SuSe in the past. It'd be interesting to have a look at it now that Novell got their hands on it.

Slackware is very forgiving, in that there is no dependency checking for the packages-- if they don't work, uninstall. Slack assumes you know what the dependencies are or will find out if something breaks. The major upside is you have no _RPM_ dependencies.

Also Slackware is designed by it's maintainer, Pat Volkerding, to be very simple and straightforward. Run levels don't exist, in that it is more like BSD than a System V distro. Also, because things are pretty simple, if you run Slackware-current, you can stay cutting edge (and secure) pretty easily.

I tried Slackware on a lark with a snapshot disk I got at Linuxworld when I was doing distro-a-month. That was four years (two personal machines and 4 rock-solid servers) ago. It must be doing something right for me.

Konfabulator. It is really nice and places MAC like widgets on your screen. There are a ton of different types of widgets. The backgrounds are from Deviant Art and finally I am using Icon Packager and Windows Blinds from Stardock for my icons and themes, but I only run Windows Blinds every once and a while. I'm a gamer so when I game, I turn it all off. I am a resource hog. The programs really don't use all that many resources though.
