6. Not in my state even but one of my favorites....

The Wave Organ is a wave-activated acoustic sculpture located on a jetty in the San Francisco Bay. The concept was developed by Peter Richards and was installed in collaboration with sculptor and master stone mason George Gonzales. Inspiration for the piece came from artist Bill Fontana¹s recordings made of sounds emanating from a vent pipe of a floating concrete dock in Sydney, Australia.Wave Organ is located on a jetty that forms the small Boat Harbor in the Marina district of San Francisco. The jetty itself was constructed with material taken from a demolished cemetery, providing a wonderful assortment of carved granite and marble, which were used in the construction of this piece. The installation includes 25 organ pipes made of PVC and concrete and are located at various elevations within the site, allowing for the rise and fall of the tides. Sound is created by the impact of waves against the pipe ends and the subsequent movement of the water in and out of the pipes. The sound heard at the site is subtle, requiring visitors to become sensitized to its music, and at the same time to the music of the environment.

11. And now, a bit closer to home........
The Rattlesnake Bridge, aka the Broadway Diamondback Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge, was built in 2002. The snake's eyes light up and its tail rattles when you exit. It is 11' tall and 280' long. Interior lighting allows the snake to be seen at night. Tucson residents either love or hate the Snake.

15. The Riverwalk in Downtown Pueblo
After a huge flood in 1921, the Arkansas River was diverted from its original riverbed to a new location between concrete levees. The original riverbed became an overgrown ditch. About ten years ago, the City of Pueblo started restoring the original riverbed - the result is shown in the photos below.

http://sangres.com/places/pueblo/riverwalk.htm

(BTW, the levee itself is listed in the Guiness Book of Records. Back in the '70s, people started painting things on the levee. Rather than paint them over, the city fathers let them remain. Today, it's listed in the Guiness Book as the longest mural in the world.)

22. Tree or Upsidedown Toilet Brush?

Cedar Rapids, Iowa -- known as the "City of the Five Seasons" (also as the "City of the Five Smells" but I'll save that for a different post) has this large piece downtown on the banks of the Cedar River. It is known officially as the "Tree of the Five Seasons." It is unofficially known as Toilet Brusheth Erectus.

Two years ago, I wanted to buy a bunch of the toilet brushes with the same shape and poke them in the ground along the walkway to the big brush/tree. My intention was to lie on the sidewalk and take a "we're not worthy" and/or "worshipping" type photograph. My request was denied by city officials. :D

On a touristy note: There are several sculptures to be found throughout the Cedar Rapids downtown area -- lots of different genres. Some I truly love, others I truly hate. Depsite personal preference, I guess they all add a certain curb-appeal to the city.

40. God and Guns in Reading, PA
This isn't really an attraction, just a funny sign on a gun shop down the street from my office in Reading, PA. There is this run down gun shop, with a bevy of heavy weapons proudly displayed in the window. Then there is a sign above it with this message:

Perhaps someone better versed in Christianity can help me here. It seems that the gist of what the sign is saying is that God grants you salvation, as a matter of merely having faith, rather than going out and doing good works. That's kind of bullshit, isn't it? I mean, what's the point of being faithful if you aren't actually living and doing good works to go along with it?

131. It was a fabulous ride ... we took
60 into AZ, but then cut back into NM on 180, so we passed close to Reserve and then followed the border down to highway 78 (Mule Creek?) where we cut back into AZ, as the sun was going down. It was beautiful. I'd love to do it again.

The detour back into NM was kind of a mistake, because 180 in AZ was closed between Alpine and Clifton, so we had no choice but to detour. But I'm glad we did. I guess if we'd known ahead of time about the detour we would have cut down through Reserve ahead of time ...

It was a great trip, though. I had to look it up on Mapquest to remember the exact route, since we wound back and forth. My in-laws are in AZ, so I hope to make one more trip through NM this summer before we move from OK to Illinois, which will make driving to AZ (and thus NM) highly improbable :(

Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 11:18 AM by CO Liberal
It's a one-man project undertaken by Jim Bishop, who owns a metalworking business in Pueblo. He's been building a castle rock by rock in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains south of Pueblo for many years now. Here are some pictures of it:

You can see some of the external scaffolding still in place. Mr. Bishop is still constructing some of the upper turrets. The dragon's head is made out of stainless steel and is part of a chimney system connected to a wood stove on the second floor. When a fire is burning in the wood stove; smoke issues from the mouth of the dragon.

Made famous by a couple of Marvel Comics Artists who used it in the downtown scenes in the comic books they worked on.

It's currentlky abandoned, the City of Stevens Point has been debateing for ages what to do with the thing. Restoring it would be way too expensive, yet no one wants to see it demolished or used for anything other than a theater.
