3 men in a Pickup Truck just tried to run me off the road
Edited on Tue Oct-21-03 11:37 AM by Mari333
I was driving to town to get the mail. I have a red Jeep, with a lot of antiwar stickers on my Jeep..
Im a grey haired 52 yr old woman.
3 men in a large pickup truck got behind me, and started revving up their motor....they were on my tail the whole way the main street that runs thru our town...first they would back off, then ram at my Jeep and Rev their motor...
I didnt swerve, I didnt do anything, I just stayed going along at 35 MPH which is the speed limit.
They were trying to scare me, 3 assholes in a truck trying to ram the back end of my Jeep or pretend to.
It didnt work.
I almost hoped they would have rammed my Jeep, I should have slammed on my brakes and gotten out and called the cops.
In the meantime, these are the types of cowards who exist out there..trying to ram into some woman's Jeep because they are angry at her anti war slogans.
Bet none of them have a son in the military.

share your stories...theres a lot of asshole cowards out there who dont like free speech.

But in fact, your last line is good. They do indeed demonstrate their feelings of inferiority this way. And these feelings are justified--they really are inferior.

16. I would recommend that if you don't own a cell phone now,
go get one and keep it in your car. When this sort of thing happens again, call 911 immediately and report a dangerous driver. Offer car make, model and year, color, license plate number and driver description. Also the road number and direction of travel. That will set the highway patrol on those guys and get them slammed. Best of all, by calling it in, the troopers won't see your stickers, and ignore the reckless driving because of your anti-war stance. I'm sure a lot of cops oppose the Shrub admenstruation, but why risk it?

I have TracPhone that you can buy in WalMart. And you get I think about 60 minutes for $19.95.Since I don't use a cell phone all that much, it's ideal for me. I got it just for security, in case something happens to my car while I'm on the road since I do some animal rescue transports.

14. Had it happen to me once, though not for political reasons
IT was a very early case of road rage. The guy followed me for over 20 miles through country roads, riding my bumper, driving agressively, trying to pass me, which I didn't let him do because I feared what he would do. I knew that if he would follow me 20 miles out of his way, I was physically in danger. So, when I got to my small town, I drove straight to the police department. A cop pulled onto the street in front of me and I followed him until he stopped. So did the enraged driver behind me. When he realized that there was a cop in front of me, he left quickly. I explained to the cop what happened and he went after the guy.

Never heard what came of it, but I warn everyone who is being treated like that to take it seriously and find a cop.

27. Yeah, and yahoos like this live in urban areas too
I grew up in a blue-collar section of Milwaukee that was *very* white and *very* conservative. I am white also. My parents (now both deceased- died when I was in college) were peace activists and open housing activists.

Our mailbox was blown up at least five times.

My dad's statue of Martin Luther King (which my Mom bought for me to give him for father's day) was smashed at work.

My dad was honked at and fliped off with regularity just because some people knew who he was.

My mom stirred up so much trouble by driving busloads of inner-city, mostly african-american kids into the country so they could see something besides pavement (she ran a day care in a housing project) that she had to have a police escort to work. She stopped two lanes of traffic with her bus one day to save a TURTLE.

These bastards are everywhere.

PS: If you haven't figured it out yet, you remind me very much of my beloved late mother.:loveya:

25. Mari's husband here ...
... and I can attest to the harrassment we both endure while driving that Jeep. The most disturbing instance was while driving I-94 with my daughter from Wisconsin. Some FedEx semi driver apparently took exception to either the license plate or the peace-sign spare tire cover. Before I knew what was happening, he was within about two feet of the rear bumper, laying on his air horn to beat hell.

He hit the accelerator, passed me, and sped on ahead. I'm not a slow driver myself but, while trying to calm my daughter with jokes about human behavior, the truck got too far ahead for me to memorize the plate number. I'd have had to have gone 90 to catch up with him, so he was lost to traffic and eventually an exit south of Milwaukee.

"I guess the man just doesn't care for peace," I told my daughter, and that was that.

Little men in big trucks ... what a bad combination.

33. Nice plate, and a little info here...
If you are sure it was a UPS truck, have the time of day, the route# you were on, and a basic location on that route, (i.e., exit #41 or some such), you can call UPS and they will know who the driver was.

All UPS trucks have sattelite relays so they can be tracked 24/7, of course the drivers have to log in/out and keep in touch with the home office. This si why you can call UPS with the routing # of a package, and they can tell you when it will get to you.

I am positive, beyond the shadowq of a doubt, UPS would take this driver to task. They have incredibly high standards, and WANT to know when their drivers are acting without regards to safety.

IMHO, if I were in your shoes, I'd call ASAP; the next person might not be so lucky, and be severly injured or perhaps killed. This guy does not belong on the road.

Addendum to others who read this post....get plate #'s on personal vehicles, and report these people. While they are harrassing you, they are endangering everyone else on the road as well. One slip up, and these idiots will be responsible for injuries or death. If THEY die because they are stupid, so be it, but I am worried about the innocents out there.

Make a bumper sticker that alludes to the fact your son is in the military. Also I’m sure you have heard of Military Families Speak Out If I were in your shoes I would join them, if you are not already involved with them.

39. That's a scary story, Mari
I am glad you didn't let them scare you, though!

I don't have any bumper stickers at all on my car, partly because I'm afraid of having it vandalized (I mean like a smashed window or a slashed tire) and partly because it's so beat up I wonder if it wouldn't hurt the message ("Look at that piece of junk, no wonder she's a democrat").

I've been road raged a couple of times, apparently for going too slow, but nothing near as bad as you, Hogarth, and progressiverealist have described -- just aggressive tailgating and getting cut off, and once I got the finger, but that's all. I did witness a really serious incident once with two guys repeatedly cutting each other off in rush hour traffic (I drive I-77 between Akron and Cleveland each day); one of them got more and more worked up until he was leaning out his window, screaming and gesturing, and then he started going after a third guy who fortunately wasn't willing to get caught up in it. I was certain they were going to cause an absolutely horrendous wreck but Mr. SUV ended up pulling off at an exit ramp, still screaming and flailing his arm.

A girlfriend once had a guy start after her on a country road, tailgating her and refusing to pass, but she had a cellphone and called the highway patrol. They patched her through to the local police who stayed on the phone with her and kept telling her how close she was getting to the place where a cruiser was going to intercept them. Sure enough, the cop was there and pulled the guy over.

I wonder, does anyone see any Bush/Cheney bumper stickers or window signs anymore? I remember seeing quite a few "Bush/Quayle" and "Dole/Kemp" ones (including the infamous "Don't blame me, I voted for Bush") long after the elections, but in the past eight months I've probably only seen one old "Sportsmen for Bush" sticker on a beaten-up redneck pickup truck and that is all. I've seen far more "Peace" or "No War in Iraq" stickers than anything it seems, along with two for Kucinich (this is Northeast Ohio after all) and a window sign for Dean.

Françoise

42. Good grief. I'm glad you're okay. These creeps are cowards.
We had demonstrations against the war up here during the winter and spring. Someone with a kid in Iraq drove past twice and threw water
on the demonstrators. They were mostly old women and middle aged men.
One of them even tried physical intimidation. They also filmed it and put it to some right-wing country song to share.

The main one was arrested. Then the state stepped in and smashed his ass with other charges. He was convicted.

Dimwittery is everywhere but I am proud of the support people gave the victims here and the state stepping on this man's face. The idiot.

I once had someone follow me home so instead I drove to a police station. I ran inside and they took me out looking for the car. They then stopped by every night for a week, well at 2 am but, asking if I had any trouble. I was very relieved at their diligence so you should ask for help, too.

Okay, that's harsh. But de-evolved right wing violence and other such shit is starting to get on my nerves. (not from you, what the right wing animals have been doing in general lately...)

Had they hit you or gotten to a point where you pulled over, I would have feared for your safety.

If you got the license plate, call the cops on them. Jail is the only civilized place those thugs will ever understand.

59. I once had a tailgater...
giving me a mobile proctology exam from the airport to downtown Pittsburgh. After flashing my brakes and slowing to 45 repeatedly over the entire distance, he still didn't get the message. In the middle of the Fort Pitt Tunnel, I came to a dead stop and put it in park. I waited for him to get out of his car to come after me, then took off.

Later,
JM
