Worse, I had to move to northern Mississippi. Helluva change from Lotus Land. I had a postdoc at UBC. I loved Vancouver. The trials of an academic career, alas.

Now I'm in Indiana near Louisville Kentucky. Still not the Pacific Northwest, but better than the deep south.

I was standing "behind the red line" like a good boy one night when the officer motioned for me to come up to the desk. I picked up my bags and took two steps forward when this asshole walked past me and got in line. I just stopped, thinking the officer would get all over this guy, but instead he gave me a cross look and told me to get back behind the line. When it was my turn he didn't even open my passport, he just stamped me and I had to go in to see one of the officials.

I was there for an hour and a half waiting for some who spoke english! Finally this new guy came up and talked to me, and he didn't know what to do with me. The supervisor came over and the guy asked him about me. The supervisor asked me what I was in Canada for and I told him I was on a technical committee for the CSA. He looked at the other guy and told him that this was one of them cases where you just smile and say "have a nice stay in Canada", so he did...lol. They were all very nice, and I got a lot of "i'm sorry's"... I told the supervisor about the dill hole at the custom's desk, and that I didn't do anything wrong....hopefully he got a talking to...:)

I have never had any problem getting out of Canada...only getting in. I went through Quebec City one evening and they caught me with 3 cartons of smokes (hey....who ever thought they would search you in QC?...lol). The women were very nice there and they kept my smokes until I returned..lol
