95 Year Old Facing Eviction For Not Paying Rent In 30 Years
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 06:37 AM by matcom
<snip>

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- After living rent-free for nearly 30 years, a 95-year-old woman faces eviction from her federally subsidized apartment in Saratoga Springs for failing to pay rent.

Louise Barney's family said the Saratoga Springs Housing Authority board granted her free housing as a retirement benefit in 1975.

But officials said the agency that oversees federally subsidized housing in the area doesn't have the power to make such agreements. Officials said she should have been paying a little more than $300 a month for her apartment.

The issue first came to light last year when a federal housing agency discovered she wasn't being charged rent.

Barney is facing an eviction hearing Wednesday morning. But housing authority officials say they're "not physically going to throw anybody out."

1. I think I'll kick a dog and run over an old man with a Hummer
Meanness must be the prevelant attitude in Dumberica nowadays. I mean, she's ninety-five frigging years old, for Christ's sake.

5. Congratulations. You've figured out America at its core.
I wouldn't go to disneyland though. Their lawyers are utterly irrational when it comes to "protecting" their animated characters and plays. (hell, they charged an elementary school a truckload of money to put on one of their dumb movies as a play and the school had to cancel. It's old news. And that's one example, they truly are vicious - and for little reason.)

3. WTF (this is in my backyard)...
I would hope they'd give this poor old woman a pass, but Saratoga Springs is REPUBLICAN HELL, so all bets are off...

4. Kick her withered old body to the side of the road...
Send the money saved to a CEO. Corporate America needs all the money they can get. </end sarcasm>

8. Somewhere out there are 721 bastards
that have no heart and voted to kick her out on the street. She's 95 for goodness sake - the woman will probably die in a few years and the problem is solved

9. There's not enough info in that article.
Does this little old lady have any money? I assume she does not and was granted the free rent benefit because of an inability to pay. Then they should stand by the original promise and stop harassing her to pay.

If I'm wrong and she has plenty of money but was illegally granted free rent because she had friends on the housing board back in the 70s, then I think she should pay.
