Anyone care to discuss the "Watchmen" movie?
Or just the 1986 comic?

Topics:

Cast members?

What to cut out?

What to leave in?

Change the costumes? Leave them the same?

Should it retain the "Cold War" theme?

Should it be a virtual frame-by-frame recreation, like Sin City?

I really wont mind if they completely cut out the Pirate stuff and the News Vendor/boy/Lesbian scenes- they are not really essential for a movie version.

Complete origins and "Minutemen" scenes are a MUST though.

After seeing Sin City, I think Mickey Rourke would be a jam-up Comedian.

DISCUSS.

1. I need to re-read it
I don't think you can do the frame by frame like Sin City for a superhero vehicle.
No changing Rorschach costume.

3. Why not? many of the frames are quite cinematic.

Think of the one in issue 11- where Rorshach & Nite-Owl II learn of Veidt's plot- standing in front of the clocks...

Or the scene with a giant Dr. Manhattan in Vietnam...

Or the entire "Minute Men" rape sequence.

I think it could be done- and it would make the movie that much better...

I hope they dont ruin it.

2. but the pirate stuff commented so well on the horrific unfolding
...of events in the "real" world of the comic...

I hope the movie doesn't shy away from the politics, is all...

And I want to go as Rorschach for Halloween...

4. Yeah- but there is not enough time.
And how are they going to fade into it? Zoom in over the boy's shoulder, then make the pages come to life? It just wont work well with so many other important aspects to cover....

If they made it into a 12 part HBO series or somthing-that would be the only way they would have time...

6. I know- but the movie is already in pre-production...
...the best we can probably hope for is a two-parter.

8. Are they going to use Nixon?....................
Rourke would make a great Comedian, it would be like he's playing is Sin City character over again. I have to agree with someone on IMDB with casting William H. Macy as Rorschach, I think he's versatile enough to carry it off. Dr. Manhattan would, obviously, have to be a CGI character to make it look good at all. Call me crazy, but I can see Alec Baldwin as Nite Owl, and someone like Brannagh as Veidt.

It should be hot.

9. No- the director suggested it would be Reagan or Bush Sr.
...the movie will not take place in 1985- which I think is a minor mistake.

Also, The "Minute Men" will have to be Silver-age archetypes if they move up the timeline...

11. I like that choice.
I'm also seeing how many folks here at DU are Moore fans.

IMDb reports trouble with the production of the upcoming "Watchmen" movie:

Paramount Pulling Out of British Studio
6 April 2005 (StudioBriefing)
Paramount's new regime under CEO Brad Grey has decided to shut down production of its costly The Watchmen feature at Pinewood Studios near London and move it to a different country. Producer Lloyd Levin told the British trade publication Screen Daily that the decision to move the $120-million production was due to "the expense of shooting in the UK with the exchange rate and the loss of certain rebates." Pinewood Shepperton, the company that owns Pinewood Studios, recently said that several productions had been put on hold because of the British government's decision to alter its tax incentives to filmmakers. Shares in Pinewood Shepperton plummeted 15 percent on word of the Watchmen pull-out. The company issued a statement saying that it "will seek to procure alternative customers for the stages but is unlikely to be able to recover all the anticipated shortfall."

Trivia footnote: New Paramount CEO Grey got his start as the producer of a number of HBO series, including "The Sopranos" and "Mr. Show."
