Post here if you have ZERO response to the Pope stuff.
I mean, I guess I should have more than a zero response (and actually this might stand as my biggest "response"), but.....I can't even muster much.

I'm extremely indifferent and apathetic about it.

And I know there have to be other DUers who feel the same.

Come out, come out, wherever you are!

So... I'm staying (mostly) out of it.

4. Well, I can see how people feel it does affect more than just Catholics
because it probably does....I mean, it's a HUGE church.

But......meh.....I just ran out of steam on that.

When I can't even muster a decent response, I know I'm not much interested.

So. What's shaking?

3. A bit bummed, but not really disturbed or affected.
As a Catholic, I'm non practicing, so as a progressive, I don't really care.

I do sympathize with my friends who are Catholic tho.

But it does provide much opportunity for snarky, sarcastic commentary which I do love.

7. The only response I have.....
is my best wishes and thoughts to the progressive Catholics here. If you're progressive and liberal, it's a bit difficult, to put it mildly, to put a good spin on this pope.

I guess all I can say is not to despair...there will be light at the end of the road.

10. I couldn't give a damn less.
I'm a lapsed catholic, and not a big fan of religion in general. I probably should care because of the influence the pope has, but nonetheless, this is a great big non-issue in my eyes.

13. I've always felt that historians have given John Pope a raw deal
Okay, he was not in the same league of commanders as generals like Grant and Sherman, but a lot of the blame for his defeat at Second Manassas needs to be laid at the feet of the McClellan clique in the Army of the Potomac. He was aggressive and ready to fight at a time when Lincoln was having a very hard time finding anyone willing to press the war in Virginia. He certainly deserves better than to be grouped with totally incompetent political generals like Banks and Sigel.

27. John Pope trivia

While serving in the US Army before the Civil War, he pioneered the use of artesian wells in the far west Texas/New Mexico desert. There is a location in Eddy County, New Mexico known to this day as Pope's Well.

30. Still he opened himself up for so many great jokes
I've always enjoyed the one about his dispatches which he rather bombastically would head, "Headquarters in the saddle." Some witty person once commented that he had his headquarters where his hindquarters should have been. That one always cracked me up.

36. There was also his rather bombastic address to his troops
Upon taking command of the Army of Virginia, telling them that he was from the West, "where we are accustomed to seeing the backs of our enemies" that the soldiers (poor guys, being commanded by the likes of Fremont and McDowell)referred to as Pope's Bull.

14. Yeah, to hear some people talk, you'd think
that this guy was about to start work building his army of Uruk-Hai to begin their march against Rohan.

Far as I'm concerned, he's just another world leader, like all the other fallible fucks who command their little pieces of this flying rock we're on.

Pope or no Pope, it makes no difference to me. I'm neither Catholic nor particularly religious and I think all this religious hierarchy stuff is just another way to make people feel inferior. The idea that a man chosen by other men somehow has a special line to God is ridiculous.

But... it is funny to scream "Ratzinger!!!"

21. I'm a born-again Pagan
So I really don't care from a religious perspective.

Thing is, the papacy is as much a political position as it is a religious title. From THAT perspective, I do kinda care somewhat.

I was brought up Catholic. My maternal Uncle is a retired priest, so I do understand the hubub to some degree.

I just don't understand why folks are so put out with the decision. Any other Pope wouldn't have been much better, IMO. The Catholic church in it's current state will never be particularly progressive in it's thinking. It's experiencing the same drive towards fundamentalism that many other mainline churches seem to be going through right now.

Had Arinze got the nod, I'd have a cool hundred bucks being electronically transferred to my account right about now.

I had a crazy uncle who gave me this $10 bet on Arinze once JPII died this year. He usually gives me lotto tickets for christmas.

I feel badly for those catholics who would like to see some progressive reform. I think adding one more conservative to the pot can't help things for anyone, no matter their orientation. Like someone said before: same shit-different day:-(

28. I am not now,
nor have I ever been any sort of catholic or christian. But I can't see how it matters anyway who the pope is.

You see he doesn't make the rules, god makes the rules. The pope just passes them on. To say the pope makes the rules, admits the game that people make this shit up. So the religious shouldn't be alluding that it matters. And the non-religious shouldn't care.:smoke:

While I understand why it matters to Catholics and also why it matters to a point to the rest of the population, I sure as hell can't see why it warrants the number of hysterical threads that are going on today - even here in the Lounge, for (insert the name of your favorite deity)'s sake!

My day off and there's nothing going on here but a damn popefest! I am depressed. :nuke:

39. I'm quite pissed about it, actually.
I REALLY didn't want him elected as pope, but now I have to deal with all sorts of shit just because I think the idea of him being a Nazi is stupid and I decided to voice my opinion that those who thought he was are wrong/dumb/whatthefuckever. x(

I'm still up for a good fight, though. My opposition has been lackluster at best.
